Could not wait to share this one, for the first time since I live in Canada I seen a beaver in its natural enviroment. We noticed the beaver on the waters edge where it was chewing on a fallen tree stump. It than moved to this location, where a smaller branch stuck out of the ice.
The picture was taken while we were out on a hike at Coots Paradise near Burlington in Southern Ontario.

The beaver Castor canadensis is the largest rodent in North America and the largest rodent in the world except for the capybara of South America. An adult weighs from 16 to 32 kg and, including its 30-cm tail, a large beaver may measure 1.3 m long.

Hallo Sky,

Hello Sky,
Oh my dear, what is he up to..? Skating?
I think they should stay inside during winter, as there is nothing much they can do anyway when rivers and lakes are covered with ice!
Well, of course they can model for photographs and get pleasant results, like here!
Greetings,
Pablo -

Hello Sky,
this must have been a great moment. Not only the sight of a beaver, which is great...but also in such a nice environment. I really like this one.
There's regularly beavers within 1 km from my house but despite hours and hours of watching I've never seen them. Shows that this species can be a hard one to spot.
Best wishes, Jacob

Hello Sky,
Nice shot and as you say a treat to see them in their natural habitat. Any idea what he is doing? He looks as if he is trying to pull the log from the ice. The snow up top is a little OE but without a grad filter there isn't a lot that can be done in that situation. The detail on the Beaver is clear and I think that's the most important thing in this shot. Nice work!
Regards,
Adrian

Good shot of an American beaver. They are quite abundant here in Texas, where I'm from. They can have extremely large burrows of sticks and mud -- some as long as 50 meters! They typically slam that flattened scaly tail against the water when threatened, making a loud splash!

Very good photo! I specifically like the log with snow in the background -- it makes it an icey composition! Great job.

Hi Sky,
You took great advantage of your opportunity when you got it. This capture has good detail and colors in this well composed winter shot.
When they are on hard water you get to see the whole beaver, congratulations on this posting.
Rick

Hello Sky
A cute capture of our Canadian Beaver chewing away on his pond. Nicely framed, good colours and details. I've heard that the Beaver needs to chew to help wear his teeth down as they grow throughout his whole life.

Hello Sky.
Very cold theme again, Brrr :)
Great detail, color, and exposure. Nice to see one in the wild, much less get a shot too. I might've been tempted to flip the beaver (That sounds weird for some reason) ;)
Well done & have a great week!

Oh, lucky you! What a neat capture. I wonder where the access to his lodge is with all that ice! It is rare to see a beaver out of the water in any season. Thanks for sharing this. It's a great shot.

Hi Sky, this is very cool (no pun intended). I have only seen these guys in the other 3 seasons, never one on ice. Your composition is very good and you have captured very good detail and colour of this guy.

Thanks, John

Hello Sky,

Hi Sky,
Very nice shot.
The colors and point of view are great.
Well done.

Hi Sky! Am I ever surprised that you found the beaver at Coots Paradise! Thought one had to go north or east of Toronto. I can see why you were so excited! Very good detail, look at those long back legs and feet, and the colour of his coat is spot on! Great capture! Congratulations! Linda

Hi Sky

What a rush of excitement I detect in your notes. There are few things that beat this adrenalin load that hits one when you find such an animal in its wild and natural habitat. What makes this even more incredible is the fact that you were hiking, thus taking this shot on the foot.

Your composition is fine showing the beaver and the tree trunk in this otherwise snowed under scene. The colours are well defined, the details are nice and sharp, and you did well with the exposure considering the dark subject and the bright snow you had to deal with.

Very well done and TFS.
Regards
Loot

PS. Today is the big day for celebration with 1 completed year on the site. I am very curious to see what you have in store for us.

Hello sky, bella foto con ottima posa del tuo soggetto, buoni i colori, manca un po' di nitidezza.

Hello Sky,
What a wonderful experience to see this busy Beaver and to be able to get close enough to photograph it!! I like his pose showing his big tail, all nicely in focus and in natural colours. The fallen log in the background fits perfectly too. Well done!
TFS and regards, Ulla

Wow, you were incredibly honoured to capture this moment.
I'm not entirely happy about the composition, but when capturing such a rare creature as this in it's natural environment I think one can be excused of such minor details.
Well done, and thank you for sharing.

Hi Sky,
Excellent shot on this Beaver. A difficult ligting, but you managed the exposure well. Very good colors and detail in the Beaver. Great that you were able to capture this shot of him in the wild. He is totally unaware of you at this point.
Scott

Hello Sky,
I'm so glad for you! It happened to me once and it was in Mont-Tremblant National Park this summer, very early in the morning but I didn't have the good lens at this moment :(

This is a beautiful capture of this little hard worker. You were very lucky to see it and your picture is beautiful. Details are good and this beautiful winter environment and its strange tail :) I understand your excitement; this is a precious capture. Thanks,
Claudine

Hi Sky,
What a lucky meeting! I only saw beavers (Castores in spanish) in TV documentary and always making dams. I'm not surprised about beaver activities on ice as beavers for me are absoletely unknown creatures.:-)
A lovely capture with good details, compostion and exposure.

Hi Sky,

Hi Sky.
What a nice scene you have pictured. I like how you managed to control the lighting and exposure. It is very difficult to capture brown animal at white BG. You have done it excellently. The reproduction of the hair of the animal, sharpness and detail of the image are perfect too. Superb work. My compliments and TFS.

Hello Sky,
Here, on the edge of Annecy lake we have few Castor but I couldn't see one, they are so wild... Exposure and sharpness are good. Perhaps the composition a bit centered.
Congratulations and thanks for not waiting to share ;-)

Hi Sky,
Great shot! It makes me wonder how a beaver deals with falling through the ice, it it ever happens...;-) I posted this shot: Caution! Beaver @ Work from last year showing a beavers work, but I've not managed to catch a shot of the actual animal. Your shot is quite excellent in all manner! It would be a hard one to top! Thanks!

I have seen beavers, but never have I seen one trying out for a hockey team, while chewing on a her/his stick! ...

Great capture, and nice presentation. Tfs, Jay

PS I have Themed up on this one! AND I have linked it from an Aussie page where the photographer was confused about what a beaver looks like... Thanx again for your clear shot!

Hi Sky. Good shot of this busy beaver. They have a tough life during that frozen period i bet. Good clarity and colours.
