Cohabiter avec le Goéland à bec cerclé


Le goéland est passé d'une espèce exclusivement marine à un habitué des centres commerciaux qui flâne dans les lieux publics, parfois à des kilomètres de toute source d'eau. Et même s'il fait encore son nid près de l'eau, le goéland moderne se nourrit en ville, où il passe le plus clair de son temps.

Cette créature opportuniste aime bien la vie urbaine à laquelle elle s'est très bien adaptée au fil des ans. Le citadin, quant à lui, est rarement disposé à partager son milieu avec son ami ailé, le blâmant souvent pour de nombreux désagréments.

Le Goéland à bec cerclé est l'une des espèces les plus communément retrouvées dans les villes canadiennes, et sa population est plus grande que jamais. Nos villes sont d'ailleurs un paradis pour les goélands affamés dont le tiers du régime alimentaire se compose de nos déchets. Le goéland ne lève le bec sur presque rien.

Animal social qui n'a pas besoin d'un grand territoire, le Goéland à bec cerclé, comme la plupart des autres goélands et des sternes, vit dans des colonies qui sont formées de milliers de couples et qui croissent rapidement.

La population des Grands Lacs, estimée à seulement 3 000 couples en 1930, en comptait plus de 440 000 au début des années 90 et a diminué à 380 000 en 2000.

C'est difficile à croire, mais le Goéland à bec cerclé a déjà été en danger de disparition. L'espèce est encore protégée par la Loi sur la Convention concernant les oiseaux migrateurs, et il est interdit de tuer ces oiseaux sans permis spécial délivré par le Service canadien de la faune d'Environnement Canada pour contrôler leur population lorsque la situation l'exige..

Problèmes causés par les goélands
Les centaines de milliers de goélands qui vivent au Canada jouent un rôle capital et positif dans l'écosystème en mangeant des quantités monstres d'insectes et de petits rongeurs.

Malgré cela, les habitants des villes leur attribuent bien des maux : détérioration de la qualité de l'eau dans les zones de baignade, perturbation de l'activité dans les endroits publics et aménagement de nids sur les toits. Le goéland fréquente nos restaurants, nos haltes routières, nos stationnements, nos parcs et même nos décharges, nous chipant souvent notre nourriture, pour nous laisser leurs excréments en échange, lorsqu'ils prennent leur envol.

Malheureusement, le goéland n'est pas facile à déloger et revient généralement assez vite après avoir été chassé.

Hi JP,
Another excellant capture in typical JP style. Nice and clear details. Very sober gray and white colors. BG is a bit of same color as of gull. I havent seen this bird in real life. But there are similar birds like swans,ducks who eat fishes has this typical style of standing on one foot. We have a saying her in india that these birds pretend to be in meditations by standing on one foot and closing eyes. So fishes come closer and birds feast on them.

Sorry I'm a bit late with this update, but the rat-race really had me in a strangle hold.

You really captured this gull in all its glorious beauty. The simplistic composition makes the bird stand out from its dark surroundings and there is absolutely nothing else in the frame to distract the attention to the least bit. The one footed stance makes me wonder if it is purely resting, thus having the other leg pulled up in between the plumage, or whether that missing leg actually was lunch for some game fish.

The colours are superbly natural and the contrast between the darkish BG and the bird really provided some prominent some prominent focus on the bird. The details are very sharp showing some excellent features of the bird, especially on the beak, the eye, and the plumage.
