Sunset on the Fraser
 |
|
| [Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note |
This was taken along a side channel of the Fraser River not far from where I live. In the winter, the sun sets in the perfect place to get a shot like this one. Although the sunset itself is quite nice, I also wanted some good foreground interest to add more depth to my composition, hence the sandbar shoreline with some scattered rocks. The silhouetted trees on either side are cottonwood trees.
I have mixed feelings about the contrail from an overhead jet, but in some ways it helped in framing the top of the photo. Fortunately the wind above helped feather it out a bit.
My tripod was also set around 3 feet off the ground instead of eye level in order to get a bit lower to the sandbar and shoreline; enabling me to keep more foreground in the photo.
In RAW development I had to work a fair bit on evening the exposure out, so the highlights were toned down a bit and the shadows were brought up. |

Hello Tim,
This is truly beautiful. I like this low POV a lot, colors, exposure and this smooth texture created by this aperture you chose. Reflection on the water and the sand is superb and so is this composition that leads us directly to the sun. Well done! Thanks,
Claudine
Hi Tim,
This almost has a tropical feel to it. The warm colors are really wonderful. I like your composition with the trees pointing toward the sun and the sandbar with the stones leading me toward the trees. The contrail is actaully quite nice, since, as you mentioned, frames the photo.

Niek
I missed this one. You are posting a lot of photos these days. I really like the lower point of view and the wonderful light on the mud flats. I can't decide either on the contrail. When I block it out I think I like the image better. It is hard to get a fresh impression once I have been looking at an image for a while. I think I like to have all the attention go to the wonderful, lustrous light and colors of the lower sky, water and foreground. Without the contrail my eye seems to keep going back and forth from sun to foreground and back without a side trip up to the light contrail. It is really nice.
