"A 'PERFECT HURRICANE'.".

Thanks to the "Sun Toucher" Mr. Niek Bouwen from the Netherlands a TN contributer that I was able to register this unique image of the Chinook.

We were on our way to Bragg Creek from Calgary along Highway # 40. The hot Chinook winds were blowing. For the last 4 days they were active. We saw these clouds dancing before us, forming an arch. But there was a great problem. I could NOT register this wonderful phenomena. The sun was shining BRIGHT into our faces travelling West.I remembered Niek's advise. "Place your sunglasses before the lens" and, I did.

THIS WAS THE RESULT.

The Chinook wind is steeped in mystery and folklore. It brings a welcome respite to Calgary and the surrounding area. The temperature changes are dramatic. For example, on January 11th. 1983, it rose 30*C in four hours. And, again on 7th. February
1964 it went up 28*C, dropping the humidity by 43%.

The Native Americans call it the "Snow Eater". It "eates" about a foot of snow per hour.
For them it is a welcome break from the cold.

Alexander MacKenzie, an early explorer, called it the "perfect hurricane". As far back as 1787, David Thompson said that it was like "travelling South". In 1900- Calgary weekly Herald: " Those who have not the warm, invigorating Chinook winds of this country, cannot well comprehend what a blessing they are. The icy clutch of winter is lessened, the earth
throws off its winding sheet of snow. Humanity ventures forth to inhale the balmy spring like
air. Animated, nature rejoices."

Venture, now, to see the workshop. Just a few days prior to the registery of the photo you could WALK accross the Bow River in Calgary. You can see: A DEFROSTING Bow River in the middle of February. The Edmontonians envy our blessings.

Hi Mario
That Niek is a very helpful guy. What a great idea to place your sunglasses in front of the camera lens to help prevent the glare to the sun. The clouds are well captured here. I love Chinooks!

Hi Aires.
What a great and fascinating note and interesting shooting technique. BRAVO.
The principal point of your shot, I think, is the phenomenal lighting, sky and clouds. Illumination of the ground is fantastic. Excellent composition, exposure, contrast, etc. Perfect done and TFS.

Hello Mario,
Excellent capture of sky.I liked POV,dramatic atmosphere, details, framing and composition a lot.
TFS..:-)

Hi Mario,
I am really glad I could help out with this technique. Aint the result wonderful? And all those Pro's ranting about what the best filter is to buy to get a well exposed shot. The warm color created by the sun and the sunglasses are marvelous. I really love the shapes in the clouds and the simple, but very effective composition.
TFS,
Niek
