Elias and I had kayaked out to a small uninhabited island near the beach where we were camped. We had seen some of these rays alive and swimming in the ocean water, but when we landed on this island, we were horrified that the local fishermen had dumped hundreds of dead rays here. I think they would remove a small amount of meat from them and then dump the rest of the animal here.
Fortunately there are still a fair number of these rays alive and well in the waters surrounding this island, but I'm sure that their numbers have been greatly reduced by overfishing. |

That island sure must have smelt bad! I think they use stingray meat in some of those 'surami' mixes you buy at the supermarket. We see stingrays here a lot,but big ones about 2m across. We try to avoid catching them when fishing.
