Diagnóstic Description:
Amplitude eave: of 49 to 56 mm dimorphic Sexes.

Male: previous wing of black color. Later wing of black color, with an opaque red patch in the average and subaverage area underneath the discal area. Edge of the wing of white color cream.

Female: previous wing of black color, with a spot cream in the distal part of the discal cell. Wing later of black color with opaque red patch in the areas posbasal, subaverage and average below the discal cell. Edge of the wing of red color.




Habitat: Edges of forest, secondary, potreros, coffee plantations and ways.



Service life:
Eggs: of yellow color, positions in groups.

Larve in fifth stage: the capsule of the head is of color bright clear coffee. The body is of opaque brown color, with spots of white color in the first torácico segment, the first abdominal segments and the anal segment. In the dorsal mean line there is a strip of rhombuses of coffee-black color, and in the back of all the caterpillar small protuberances of pale yellow color appear.

Pupa: it is of sure brown color with areas of green-celestial color.



Feeding: The adults visit the flowers of Lantana camara (Verbenaceae) and Impatiens spp. (Balsaminaceae).



Behavior: The males just emerged from pupas visit grounds and humid sands.




Relations : Hospedera plant: Zanthoxyulum ssp., Casimiroa edulis, Citrus spp. (Rutaceae).



Distribution: Of the South from the United States and Mexico to Brazil. Subspecies: From Mexico to Panama

Hola Ricardo..."El Joven de las Mariposas" Sin duda otra más de tus preciosas mariposas, en esta me gusta la composición, la flor dá un poco más que decir y admirar en ella, esos tonos variados en color naranja obtenidos son muy buenos, esa pequeña florecilla al centro le da un toque especial, así como la fragilidad de los pétalos. Admiro el detalle de los ojos negros y los colores del abdomen y tórax de la mariposa, esas motas rojas no las había visto antes, cuanto detalle de nuestra madre naturaleza permite captar la magia de la fotografía digital. Wow Ricardo, veo que con esta hermosa lepidóptera logras los 1000 puntos, felicidades!!!! estoy segura que pronto los superaras con muchos puntos más y cada vez mejores fotografías. Wow, you have quite a collection of butterflies and caterpillars! This one is a beauty too, not easy to bring out all the detail of the black, very well done! The background is a bit busy maybe (in a perfect world .. well that's nature). Great capture in any case!
