[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
Nopal (Opuntia sp., Cacti of the Cuatro Ciénegas Valley. This place is a biological wonder hidden in the Eastern Sierra Madre Mountains of Mexico. This place is a rare sanctuary in a harsh desert habitat, Cuatro Ciénegas teems with endemic species. The refuge has more than 75 species of fish, reptiles, amphibians, crustaceans, mollusks, insects and more than 400 species of cactus found nowhere else in the world. An impressive variety of bats and migratory birds also find refuge in this desert oasis. The valley is best known for its gypsum dunes, which are unique in Mexico and one of only three such places in North America. The gypsum dunes, native grassland matrix community, xerophilic shrubs, canyon systems, and Coahuilan box turtle are other targets that have been the focus of attention in Cuatro Ciénegas.

Hi Silvia,
Nice shot of the prickly pear cactus(I think)...I was told that the tunas(fruit below the flower) are good to eat but they must not be on the variety we have in Galveston...I tried but they are inedible...Anyway, a good capture in an unusual place...TFS

Asi que este es el famoso nopal...por aqui hay unas especies muy parecidas, conocidas como tunas y algunos comen sus frutos. Muy educativa tu foto.

Hola Silvia.
Por aquí también han florecido las tuneras. Flores de bellos tonos que van del amarillo al naranja intenso.
Preciosa planta y hermosos y jugosos frutos.

Hi Silvia

It's very interesting to read your notes. Are they part of your job?
Concerning the picture: I like it very much because it is between realism and abstraction. It gives a very good impression of that kind of cactus and also has an artistic aspect with those shapes and light spots made by the flowers. From the technical point of view, I think your picture lacks a bit of contrast.
