House Finch. Carpodacus mexicanus.

Adults have a long, square-tipped brown tail and are a brown or dull-brown color across the back with some shading into deep gray on the wing feathers. Breast and belly feathers may be streaked; the flanks usually are. In most cases, adult males' heads, necks and shoulders are reddish. This color sometimes extends to the stomach and down the back, between the wings. Male coloration varies in intensity with the seasons and is derived from the berries and fruits in its diet. As a result, the colors range from pale straw-yellow through bright orange (both rare) to deep, intense red. Adult females have brown upperparts and streaked underparts.

Their song is a rapid, cheery warble or a variety of chirps.

Range and habitat
These birds are mainly permanent residents; some eastern birds migrate south. Their breeding habitat is urban and suburban areas in the East as well as various semi-open areas in the West from southern Canada to northern Florida and the Mexican state of Oaxaca; the population in central Chiapas may be descended from escaped cagebirds.

Originally only a resident of Mexico and the southwestern United States, they were introduced to eastern North America in the 1940s. The birds were sold illegally in New York City as "Hollywood Finches", a marketing artifice. To avoid prosecution under the Migratory Bird Treaty Act of 1918, vendors and owners released the birds. They have become naturalized; in some unforested areas, they have displaced the native Purple Finch and nonnative House Sparrow. In 1870, or before, they were introduced into Hawaii.

Saludos
Luis52.

Hi Luis.
Wonderful in all respects shot. Pictured scene is amazing. I like fine branch, impressive cloudy sky and of course wonderful bird. Its details and sharpness as well as colouration are reproduced perfectly. Pose of the bird, turn of head and your POV are brilliant and composition of the picture at whole also is great. My warm greetings and TFS. It is true masterpiece.

Hello Luis,
I was reading the notes and found it interesting that these birds derive their intense colours from the berries they eat.Such are the wonderful ways of nature and the magic of its Creator, one can only look and learn around in awe.You have made a wonderful capture here to share with us.I love the posture of this House Finch that is looking so adorable.I also like the way the branch spread into a nice "Y" againt the light blue sky with your subject perched on it.Brilliant sharpness and details.

The lovely spread of pink on the body of the bird is so rich and glorious....you know it also reminds me of the festival "Holi", we are celebrating here today in India..of colours wherein natural colours (called GULAL primarily a beautifully fragrant pink powder smelling of roses and more flowers) derived from skin friendly sources such as flower extracts, turmeric, sandalwood etc are smeared on each other. In anceint India the festival was a soothing treatment for the skin thus deriving the best benefits of fragrant natural elements due to their therapeutic values(unfortunately the natural colours are used lesser and lesser today).Hence, many of us do not play HOLI.

So it is all the more a pleasant surprise to see this beautiful bird so natural so much still living its way the Creator had orginally designed it to lead..deriving its colour from the very natural resources it is meant to..

A lovely presentation with educative notes...so much for my celebration of my HOLI today.
Thank you so much for sharing this lovely birdie.

Cheers
Silpa
P.S:This beautiful HOLI reminder goes right into my "Favourite Bird Shots" theme.

Hola Luis,
Que hermosa!
A beautiful capture of a male House Finch taken from a great dorsal POV with its head turned to show excellent colours and a catchlight in the eye. The composition on the almost bare branch against a fine sky is great.
Un abrazo fraternal,
