Verillion Flycatcher (Pyrocephalus rubins.)

Geographic Range
The Vermillion Flycatcher's range extends from the southwestern United States down through Mexico, Central America, and as far south as Argentina

The Vermillion flycatcher prefers open habitats such as arid scrubland, farmland, desert, savannah, cultivated lands, and riparian woodland settings. Specifically, their nests can be found in willows (Salix spp.), oaks (Quercus spp.), cottonwoods (Populus spp.), mesquites (Prosopis spp.), and sycamores (Platanus spp.) lining streams. However they are not found in areas with a dense canopy of Fremont cottonwood (Populus fremontii) and mesquite understory

Vermillion flycatcher adult males are a bright scarlet or "vermilllion" color on the top of their head and on underparts. They have a dark-brown mask that covers the face, ear-coverts, and nape of neck. The top of the wings and the tail are also blackish-brown.

Adult females are grayish-brown on the top of their head, ear-coverts, and wings and tail. They are darkest at the tail and they have a superciliary grayish-white stripe on their face. Their underparts are whitish but become pale red. Their breast is streaked with gray, as well as their sides.

Immature females are similar to the adult female except that they have yellowish posterior underparts. Immature males look similiar to adult females during the summer of the second calendar year, but their underparts are salmon pink or pale-orange red in color.

Behavior.
Vermillion flycatchers spend little time on the ground. They are diurnal and are known like other flycatchers for their characteristic sallying from a perch to capture prey in mid-flight. No information is available on sleeping, roosting, or sunbathing. Both the male and female preen frequently during the day, and they are observed to wipe their bills on branches to clean them off after feeding.

Saludos
Luis52.

HelloLuis,

You have made a photo with very nice and contrasting colors. The composition is fine having few elements. Therefore viewers attention is concentrated on the main subject, the bird.

Thank you for sharing,
Cristian

Hello Luis
What a pretty bird in flaming vermillion colours!

I am absolutely impressed by the fantastically handled exposure and the neat PP work showing well settled and rightfully handled colours on the bird. The pale blue sky as Bg makes for a nice contrast to this gorgeous beauty thus enhancing the red on the bird.

I like the way the perch is veering off in a diagonal fashion.A very nice composition worth every penny. Thanks a ton for sahring this along with the detailed notes.

Cheers
Silpa

Hi Luis.
Sweet picture of a most beautiful birdy. I like simply and so charming subject. I like brilliant presentation of this bird with terrific colour rendition, great details and at a very attractive calm pose. Bravo. Superb job.
Alexei.

Ciao Luis, wonderful red bird bird with fantastic details, lovely diagonal composition with splendid sharpness, very well done, ciao Silvio

Difficult to believe such beautiful birds exist on earth, Luis.
The bird is aptly named, considering how very red it is.
You have, as usual, made a perfect capture here. The bird is totally unobstruced and stands sharply against the blue sky.
A technically outstanding image.
TFS and regards.
Ram

Dare I say anything? wow Luis...this is one neat image...I think its value is held in the wonderful saturation of the bird itself in natural style. No problems here...of course had it been my shot it would have washed out...my luck or your skill one!
