Hoodede Oriole. Female (Icterus cucullatus)

Physical description :
Hooded Oriole male has conspicuous orange hood, giving the species its name.
Adult male has orange-yellow head, nape, rump and underparts, brighter on head. Bib is black. Face shows narrows black mask, extending from lores and auricular area, down to upper breast in almost straight line. Back is black, slightly fringed with olive in fresh plumage, giving a scalloped appearance. Tail is black, relatively slender and long, well graduated with rounded tip fringed with white. Wings are black, showing two white wing bars, one wider than other. Flight feathers, especially tertials, are narrowly edged with whitish or greyish.
Adult male in winter has buffy brown tips on back, giving barred pattern.
Adult female has different plumage with olive-yellow head, rump and tail (more olive with greenish edges), and underparts. Back is dull greyish olive. Wings are greyish black with two greyish wing bars.
Immature male resembles adult female, but it shows black bib and mask, less extensive than in adult male.
Immature female is similar to adult female.
Juvenile resembles female, but it has buffy wing bars and duller plumage.
Bill is relatively short and decurved, blackish in colour. Eyes are dark brown. Legs and feet are blue-grey.

Western birds (Icterus cucullatus nelsoni) are yellowier.
Texas races (Icterus cucullatus sennetti) are orange, with black on forehead.

Voice : Hooded oriole's call is a sharp, nasal 'wheet'. This call may be interspersed with rolling soft dry chatter 'chut-chut-chut-whew-whew'.
Song is a rapid series of whistles, trills and rattles. Song length is highly variable.

Habitat : Hooded Oriole breeds in scattered trees areas, open areas with trees especially palms, in desert oases or along streams, and in mesquite brush. We can find it commonly in urban and suburban areas.
GEOGRAPHIC RANGE: Hooded Oriole breeds from southern Texas to central California, and also in eastern Mexico and Belize.
It winters in Mexico, with a few in California and Arizona.

Behaviour : Hooded oriole forages in shrubs and trees, searching for insects and fruit. It also consumes nectar from flowers, piercing the base to obtain nectar. But it doesn't pollinate the flowers. It feeds in brushy vegetation at the edge of nesting area. It forages from large tree canopy to close to the ground, searching undersides of leaves, and may hang upside down. But it is rarely seen on ground where it moves by hopping.
When breeding season starts, males may be aggressive towards one another. Some behaviour are observed, such as chasings, displays with bill upwards and sleeked feathers, and continuous chatter. These displays are directed at other species, but several males or pairs of Hooded Orioles may feed near other bird's species if food resources are abundant in an area.
Hooded Orioles are probably monogamous. During courtship displays, male moves from branch to branch, with noisy fluttering wings, bowing and bobbing. Female follows it. When perched, male keeps wings down and sings softly. Female responds to the male in the same way.
Hooded Oriole migrates mainly by night, in loose flocks of 5 to 10 birds.

This Hooded Oriole is lovely. The bird is sharp, the natural setting blurred together (DOF) helps me realize that the colors are very similar to the bird itself. The pose is pretty typical, but the colors of the Oriole's beak really get my attention. What an unusual array of colors! The plumage is also eye-catching, but the beak is more so. (To me) Good POV and DOF. The composition enhances the subject - thank you for sharing.

A very nice natural image of this one Luis. The colours are so soft...in earth tones or natural pastels if you will...and the bird looks so much more alive among the surrounding brush and bush.....You still seem to have that knack...or perhaps the eye for some things and yet you also appear to be getting a tad if not more quality....very nicely presented!

I have seen Orioles, but n'ver photographed them And i think they are much brighter around here in plumage as compared to these hooded orioles. I like this pose as if it is playing hide-and-seek with you.The details on the beak show an interesting structure...i love the muted environmnet except for the branches on the left.
Good contrasta dn DoF and contrats.
