A new bird for TN. As far as I know there is no photo posted on TN of the boat-billed heron.
Found from Mexico to Bolivia and Northern Argentina, the boat-billed heron or boatbill (Cochlearius cochlearius) has a remarkably broad and heavy bill, which is about 3 inches long and 2 inches wide. It lives in mangroves, freshwater marshes, wooded swamps, shores of lakes and rivers, ponds and streams in wet forest. It may be found from sea level to 800 to 2600 metres of elevation. The boatbill is a nocturnal heron. It is a solitary feeder at night. It hunts by stabbing preys, or walking slowly in shallow waters. It may run to catch a prey. Its bill seems to be very sensitive, and it opens at the merest touch. It serves as a resonator, and may produce single and multiple bill-pops resembling handclaps. While feeding, the boatbill often utters a frog-like croak. During the day, it is perched in trees, among dense foliage in the mangrove. The boatbill is non migratory bird.
