[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
I took this photo in Cozumel in 2006 - which wasn't too long after Hurricanes severely damaged the island & the reef. Cozumel is an island in the Caribbean Sea off the eastern coast of Mexico's Yucatán Peninsula, opposite Playa del Carmen. The island was struck directly by two Category 4 hurricanes during the 2005 Atlantic hurricane season, Hurricane Emily and Hurricane Wilma, which together devastated much of the infrastructure and tourism industry on the island. Several successful efforts have been made to reconstruct damaged areas.

Even with the damage to the reef & the sand covering much of the reef - the diving in Cozumel is still amazing. There is tons of life in the waters around this tiny island. We saw turtles & barracuda on every dive, huge parrot fish, rays, octopus... and porcupinefish, of course.

Porcupinefish are sometimes confused with pufferfish. They are closely related to pufferfishes but porcupinefish have spines on their body. Porcupinefish have the ability to inflate their body by swallowing water (or air) and become round like a ball.

A very beautiful picture of this porcupine fish in its natural environment, and interesting story.
