The House Finch (Carpodacus mexicanus) is a medium-sized finch of the Rosefinch genus.

Description
Female and male Adults have a long, square-tipped brown tail and are a brown or dull-brown color across the back with some shading into deep gray on the wing feathers. Breast and belly feathers may be streaked; the flanks usually are. In most cases, adult males' heads, necks and shoulders are reddish. This color sometimes extends to the stomach and down the back, between the wings. The male coloration varies in intensity with the seasons and is derived from the berries and fruits in its diet. As a result, the colors range from pale straw-yellow through bright orange (both rare) to deep, intense red. Adult females have brown upperparts and streaked underparts.

Their song is a rapid, cheery warble or a variety of chirps.

Range and habitat
These birds are mainly permanent residents; some eastern birds migrate south. Their breeding habitat is urban and suburban areas in the East as well as various semi-open areas in the West from southern Canada to northern Florida and the Mexican state of Oaxaca; the population in central Chiapas may be descended from escaped cagebirds.

Originally only a resident of Mexico and the southwestern United States, they were introduced to eastern North America in the 1940s. The birds were being sold illegally in New York while marketed as the "Hollywood Finch." Many vendors and owners released the birds into the wild in order to avoid prosecution. The released birds spread rapidly and, in some unforested areas, have displaced the native Purple Finch. In 1870, they were introduced into Hawaii.

Of course you have birds much of the year, but I am so glad to see them back here now that it changes the ways in which I see your bird posts. This is a fine one. I took one yesterday which I will add to my there...A VERY nice image of the rich colours Luis! It is among my favorite of the "common" birds we have here...

Hola Luis, quizá observo la luz un poco dura, pero me gusta la composición y el color que tiene este bonito pajaro. Un saludo

Hello Luis,

What an unusual pov, using an upright twig!
Lovely details and colours of this bright member of the finch family!
The sun looks very bright but you have coped with it admirably. The image shows up well against the clear blue sky!

Kind regards,
Bev :-)

Hi Cousin,

Now this looks familiar - finch and sky! Nice shot on the tree - love the way he is gripping it. Not much around here now except doves, finches and sparrows. But we never know when something new will turn up.

Hi Luis,

good capture and well composed of this beautiful bird with its colourful plumage.
Good of sharpness with beauiful colors.

I've never seen this bird before.
Gert

Hello Luis,

Excellent composition, POV, DOF and sharpness. Very nice colours. That is funny how the bird (and the colours) is split by the branch: one side red and the other side grey.
Cheers,
Mariki
