Egretta Tricolor

Scientific Name : Egretta Tricolor (Muller, 1776)

Diagnostic Description: It measures 66 cm. and it weighs 350 grs. It is thin, with the long pick and the very lengthened neck.
In the adults the head, neck and the superior region are mainly of leaden gray color. The line along the part previous of the neck is brown and white. The neck and the chest are purpler, with brown lines, and the abdomen and the lining of the wings they are white. The skin of the face is yellow orange with a stain in the area loreal. The iris is yellow anteado, the pick it is of color horn and you restitution toward the culmen, and the paws are yellow.
During the reproductive time the feathers are white lengthened in the later part of the neck and in the back.
The immature copies present the head, mantel and the neck of color gray ; the rest is seemed the adult, although without the lengthened feathers.
The juvenile individuals exhibit a similar pattern to that of the adults, but with the opaque reddish brown neck and the mantel brown olive instead of gray.


Habitat: He/she is frequently found in habitats of fresh water and salted, stagnate, ponds, margins of ponds of salted water and swamps.


Reproduction: Their nest consists on a platform made of sticks, with a light central depression, frequently lined with leaves or grass. Do 3 eggs put (opposing fué a nest with three pigeons in a big mixed colony of heron and ibis) of blued clear green color. They reproduce in June.

Estationality : It is a species migratory neártic. Also, it makes marked seasonal movements, related with changes in the level of the water in their habitat.

Feeding: He/she expects patiently from foot for their prey when foraging, or he/she walks secretly. It frightens small fish when revolving the water with the paw and then it pursues them.

Behavior: They are solitary.

Relate: In some occasions they accompany to other groups of blue. He/she is considered a species it plagues in some places of the country where he is practiced the piscicultur, because he/she feeds of pond fish.


Distribution: He/she is found in the southeast of U.S.A., north of Mexico and Western Indies to the central part of Brazil and Peru.
