[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
This is a sunset over the Mississippi River. This is a backwater area off the main channel on the Missouri side of the river. The river was very low at the time of this photo, and alot of stumps and shallow sandbars become exposed.
I was hoping for more dramatic clouds and color, but a fairly routine sunset on this day. The photo was shot from a elevated section of old bridge left as an observation area.

What causes beautiful sunsets?

I did alittle research to help with the question not everyone knows the answer too.

Dust does not cause brilliant sunsets. If it did, certain cities like New York and Mexico City would be on top of the list, and they are not. Actually, clean air is best for the best sunsets.

Sunlight is composed of a spectrum of colors that ranges from violet and blue at one end to orange and red on the other. At sunrise or sunset, sunlight takes a much longer path through the atmosphere than during the middle part of the day. More violet and blue light is scattered out of the beam along the way, and so the light which reaches the human eye early or late in the day is reddened. So the conclusion is that sunsets are red because the daytime sky is blue. (Please don't ask me why the sky is blue.)

Pollution softens the sky's colors, because the particles of dust and dirt are scattered and are of varying sizes, so the wavelengths sunlight of light passing through the particles are mixed. This lets us see muted tones, more middle of the spectrum.

The best sunsets occur when there are at least a few high clouds. Higher clouds are hit by the sun's rays before they pass through the lower atmosphere, where the air has more particles. So the bright reds and oranges are filtered through at the high cloud's level.

So Now I have an excuse to take another vacation to find some cleaner air for my sunset photo obsession.

Scott, it's a baeutiful sunset, feels quiet and peaceful, if there is a silhouette it would be even better, or maybe put the sun in one third bottom frame to expose the sky more

Lovely colour Scott. The clouds in the sky looks quite nice against the glow. Nice POV and Tte trail over the water is a good capture. Very tranquil setting. Nice to view. Thanks

Very nice picture ! I have fond memories of this place - I used to go to St Louis quite often - and this magnificent sunset bring them back . The river is truly impressive there, and you can start dreaming about lewis and Clark, too...

Very nice work Scott. The big ball is right where it should be in the frame..No lens glare and a nice transition of reds and yellows in this sky..The path of light on the water adds greatly..Very well done!

Hi Scott
May I sugget Namibia - you will not readily find a better country in the world to shoot really spectacular sunset and sunrises than the contry of my birth!
Love this scene fom Huckelberry Finn and Tom Sawyer - a realy nice view. Just unbelieveable there is so much water as in this twin rtiver system. Longest river system - combo - in the world. Nile is longest single river, as far as I remember!

Lovely sunset. Like the dark clouds adding contrast to the sky and the little black dots in the river. Great DOV.

I have never seen Mississippi River and want to go there! Very beautiful picture.

I've almost never been disappointed with a sunrise or sunset, and this one is pretty great in my view. If this is the fairly routine, I can't wait to see the spectacular. The colors are very vibrant and vivid. I like the low hanging grey clouds and the muddy looking mississippi. Well done.

Still busy trying to catch up on my long overdue backlog so I am still visiting some of your earlier postings to deliver a couple of well deserved smiley’s.
Another brilliant sunset. People always talk about the beautiful sunsets of Africa. I can assure you that your American sunsets do not have to stand back a single inch. This is stunning. Splendid colours and composition with magnificent impact.
Great work and TFS.
