[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
I went for a walk at our local nature center to continue to practice with my new macro lens. This time I loaded on my Canon 1.4 extender to give more rannge and increase magnification. This shot was taken at 7:30pm in the evening with a hazy setting sun. The temp. was still about 95 F. and very humid.
I was lucky to find this female Halloween Pennant Dragonfly that got tired of me chasing her around. She finally allowed me to get close with the camera and tripod. A breeze was blowing wich made trying to keep sharp focus a nightmare. I was able to get several decent closeup shots.

I am still trying to be more creative with light and composition. I think these are somewhat unusual, but I was happy with the results

I have posted a landscape version of this same dragonfly with a different composition. I am asking everyone to tell me which version they like better. I liked this one personally, but I respect everyones opinion.

The last time I asked for everyones opinion was on my B&W Zebra shot titled "Whiskers" Based on feedback and suggestions for improvement, I ended up entering and winning a regional photo contest in the B&W catagory. So give me your honest opinions here.

Beautiful shot, Scott. The macros is amazing -- incredible detail. The evening light works well; the light is not that dramatic, but it is very pleasant. I think you've done a great job, especially in light of the wind on these tall plants (I live in a windy area, so I know!). The only suggestion I would have would be impractical -- a horizontal composition with the whole 'hopper. But this is perfectly great just as it is. As for which one I like better, I don't have a favorite -- they're both very good but very different.
Mike

Hi Scott,

I think you manage pretty well with your new macro lens. The focus is great and allows us to see each single detail. Color and BG are great. I like the version posted in workshop better because we can see its nice wings. TFS,

Claudine

I like this one better than the one in your workshop, Scott. It gives complete close-up details of the head and legs. The image is sharp and crisp and you have done very well with your new equipment.

Hi Scott
I like this portrait view much better than the landscape workshop view. Although more of the dragon's body is visible in landscape, the sheer detail of the legs and head in portrait is stunning. The missing portion of the legs in landscape is also distracting. Hope this is useful. Regards.
Greg

Hi Scott

Fantastic macro, awesome detail. Congrats. :-)

Wow ! Impressive portrait ! This great close-up allows to see a lot of details. Light and colors are pleasant too. Well seen and well done my friend.

Hi Scott,
Great macro work, this is scary..! Your investment paid off...
Superb details in this pin sharp image, amazing details!
Subject well framed in a dynamic composition, well done indeed!
Greetings,
Pablo -

Well captured Scott,
The details are nice, clear and sharp.
Good colours, lighting and exposure. POV is spot on.
I prefer this shot to the WS, however I would prefer to see a touch more space to the top and Rightside of the image as the D'fly seems a bit squashed in, or a frame would be good IMHO.
Thanks for posting, have a great week my friend.

Hi Scott!
I like both your pictures, but vertical version is better in my opinion. Very high quality and excellent details. Your hardware works very well with you :-) I like tight composition and brown colours. Great progress my friend!

Hello Scott, excllent colors, Bg, POv DOF perfect details, Great close up details Are crisp, You have all the luck fro these close ups to be able to take a photo of such a samll creature up close is just amazing. TFs Kyle

Hi Scott,
Excellent sharp detail seen in this extremely close composition..Very good light, color, BG, and DOF as well. At 1/20th, any slight air movement is death to the macro photographer..as you know :)
I shoot macro at the flower tops, and these s-speeds myself many times..I say again - very difficult with any air movement whatsoever..
Very well done.

Hi Scott,
Woow, this thing looks pretty fearsome that close. Great detail, especially with the converter on. Perfect exposure and great framing. I always find their eyes confusing, it's very hard to get a good view of them unless you get really close. They quite often look blurred when it's obvious they're not. Perfect DOF, no fall-off and excellent neutral BG. Great work again!
Cheers,
Adrian

First of all this is a very nice shot, out of the two images I would have to say this one is the best. Wind can be very cruel at times and can create some disapointing results, but patience & persistence work hand in hand. :)

hi scott
enormement de detyails sue ce gros plan de libellule,on distingue legerement les facettes de l'oeil.
tres bien fait.

Hi Scott,
it's a very nice macro with very good details, especially with a converter. As Howard mention it's not easy to shot with that long SS 1/20 sec but you manage very well here.
The POV and pose are good. Well done with the exposure too.
Great work, my friend.

Bonjour Scott
Félicitation pour cette très jolie prise de vue avec ce super macro. C'est vraiment un bel insecte et les couleurs sont justes.
Félicitations pour la netteté et les détails.

Hello Scott,
This is excellent macro work.
A great composition and POV,good lighting and nice sharp detail.
Each to their own but I prefer this composition to the landscape version.
Great shot well done, keep 'em coming!

Hi Scott,
This is a superb macro. I really have no comment as all settings seem perfect to me. For my personal preference, I like the landscape version. The play of light and more of dragonfly to see made stronger impact. Nevertheless both versions are great picture.

ps my wife said, "Wow!"

Scott,
Your getting a pretty good grip of that new Macro lens. Awesome detail and great lighting.
The sticky arms on this guy amazes me! Great composition here too! I can't wait to see some more of your macro's! The OOF BG is superb and the portrait framing rocks! I like both shots for different reasons....the landscape version is nice but this one was probably a more complicated composition.
Make sense? I'll end this critique, shaking my head in amazement! Damn....
Scott

That a very nice capture Scott, you got incredibly close for this one. The pose is very good here strengthening the close composition. well done.

Hello Scott,

Top marks on the copmposition, very good! In one way I like it alot in another is kind of appears that the dragonfly is being pulled from the perch. It's all very good but I thnk you could get a little more colour with some saturation. Very well done.

*I've turned off my points, I cannot recieve and I cannot give, I'm sorry for the latter*

Impresionante super macro Scott, realmente.
Los detalles obtenidos al igual que su nitidez, son grandiosos.
El fondo limpio permite realzar aun más la imagen del insecto y su percha.
Una adecuado encuadre y elección del recorte completan una excelente presentación.
Cordiales saludos... Ricardo

Impressive super macro Scott, really.
The details obtained the same as their clarity, they are grandiose.
The clean background allows to enhance more the image of the insect and their hanger.
An appropriate frame and election of the cutting complete an excellent presentation.
Cordial greetings... Ricardo

H, Scott.
This has very good composition and POV. Very close = rich details. Nice BG, light and colors.
