[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
This shot was taken at our local nature center. I have been using my macro lens alot lately so I can feel comfortable with it, and know its full capabilities. I was working very low to the ground in the grass at the edge of the lake trying to capture a shot on this very tiny Least Skipper Butterfly. He was smaller than a dime in size. I got the classic full frame shot which I have posted as a workshop photo. I then pulled back some and captured the Skipper and a Mosquito on the same small leaf. After showing the photos to a few friends, they all voted for this shot as the post for it's unique composition. So the full skipper shot can be viewed in the workshop.

Least skipper - Ancyloxypha numitor

Wing span: 1 3/4 to 2 1/2 inches

Habitat: moist or wet open places with tall grasses such as ditches, marshes, slow streams, also hillsides or old fields with tall grasses

Hey Scott,
beautiful capture and composition of this lovely butterfly,
and wonderful to add the tiny (quite disliked) mosquito on the tip :P
Great shot
Cheers,

That's fun to get two in one! But I think you've sharpened or darkened this one too much so I prefer your original. Even so very nice sharp shot and excellent composition.

hi scott
bons details sur le papillon,l'autre insecte est plus petit et difficile a identifié,belles couleurs egalement et beau BG bien fait.

That's a fantastic and dramatic capture of those two together, Scott. I like the composition very much. A lot of tension.
The diagonal works well, with the two bugs on either end.
Light and focus are perfect, and the DOF is great.
TFS. : )

Hello Scott,
Interesting "confrontation"..!
I like the framing and composition a lot, and both insects are captured with pleasant colours and nice details...
Macro work well done!
Greetings,

Hi Scott,
interesting and appealingly well composed subminiature macro. I very much agree with your friends: that combination of two insects is unique and quite funny!
Thank you, and best regards,
Peter

Hi Scott

Great work with this one! Shoot one, get one free :))
Excellent job on both this and the WS picture, nice colors, DOF and POV. The details are perhaps a bit soft but on such small subjects, it is very rare when they are not :)
Great composition managed here with mosquito in the framing.

Bravo and TFS
Horia

Hello Scott,
Great close up.
Can you explain me why the 1,4X II...
Is this to have some distance between lens and subject or is to have a better blurred BG?
TFS

Hi Scott,
Curious shot where the skipper seems to be a predator! A agree with you: this composition is very good. A nice macro with good details, light and very sort dof.

Nicely done. Great eye to spot this and well recorded in terms of light and clarity. I like the diagonal element a lot. In an ideal world I would like just a skosh more room in the top left. But I think you've got the hang of that macro!
Mike

Salut Scott
félicitation encore une grande composition de ta part avec ce joli papillon avec comme prime ce petit insecte
Bravo et merci...JP

Hello Scott!
Without reading your note it's not easy to tell that the skipper is such a small creature because the mosquito has to be really tiny. I sometimes use the 1.4x extender on the Tamron 180mm macro, but I think that using such combo in closeup shots compromises the sharpness more than use of the extender when you're further away from the subject. I hope you'll find a minute to let me know what you think about this. Have a great weekend! (Rain again in the Northeast).
Mark

Hi Scott!
To get two different subjects within the frame and both in focus is a commendable feat. Your decision to post this double image is thus quite justified.
Very well composed shot with great POV, DOF, colours and sharpness.
Feels good to be back on the TN and enjoy great shots like this one.
Thanks for your comment on my new picture.
Regards.
Ram

Hi Scott,

I find this photo very valuable because you managed to capture two different insect species in one shot. The composition is great coming so close in, even if the leg of the mosquito touches the top margin. It doesn't bother at all! The OOF BG isolates the sharply rendered insects and leaf perfectly. The correct exposure led to a very accurate color rendition! Excellent job! TFS!

Good night,
Eddie

Hello Scott,
Curiouis and nice image, good details and colors; the blurred BG is not distracting and works perfectly. I like the title you´ve choiced.

Hi Scott,
This is really funny. They seem to wait in line to go... nowhere :-) Great catch with those two species at the same time. Details, POV, DOF and lightning are very good. Well done Scott, regards,

Scott,
Gosh I missed this one. I guess when you send it to my email I forget I haven't critiqued it! Very awesome, I like the scale you have created with the skipper, here. Although our "skeeters" seem to get bigger every year they are still very tiny when it comes to photography. I love the composition and the PERFECT shallow DOF, your the master at that.
Great diagonal composition. I wonder if the skipper pounced on the skeeter...

Hi Scott,
Great capture my friend. It is like mosquito vs Skipper:)
Nice colors,pov,dof,blurred green bg,note,focus and timing.TFS
Have a Great Week,
Chris

Indeed very great composition.
Colors are excellent.
The only little nit is that the antennas of the little insect are touching the frame (I think I would have crop less, or I would have add a few mm of space above in some PP work)

Good shot Scott.
