Papilio Glaucus, Eastern Tiger Swallowtail butterfly, dark form, I think. Normally, this butterfly has yellow wings. Particularly in the south, females sometimes have a dark form, supposedly as a mimic of the Pipevine Swallowtails, which as distasteful.

This one is a very dark one, but the stripes on the wings can barely be made out. This is the only dark form that I've ever seen.

This butterfly inhabits eastern North America and into southern Ontario in Canada. Caterpillar food plants include Cottonwood, Tulip Tree, Sweet Bay, Cherries and others.

John,
Great photo of the Black Swallowtail. Your right, the ones I've seen usually have much more pronounced white and light blue markings on their wings, this one is a beauty though.
The sharpness and details are excellent, wonderfully composed!
Ron

Hallo John
Such a beautiful and large butterfly that about fills the whole frame. The colours and patterns are really special and it looks like coloured powder dust have been dropped on the wings. Lovely presentation with super sharpness, focus and splendid detail. Outstanding depth of field. It can actually go through as a piece of artwork. A splendid piece of work, presented in a most delightful manner. It was a real enjoyment looking and appreciating your "papilon". Love the light shining from below. Thanks for sharing.
Kind regards
Anna
