[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
This is a Hericium, possibly Hericium erinaceus, but its spines never get long enough for that species, and it's small, this specimen was about 3.5-4" across and never got any bigger. David Arora, in his wonderful book "Mushrooms Demystified", mentions a short-spined variety of H. erinaceus in eastern N. America, and I think this is it, and is possibly a separate "new" species.

Found on dead hardwoods, rare in my area, I've only seen 2 specimens in 11 years of seriously looking at mushrooms (I've been picking the "easy" ones for the table for a much longer time, since 1973). Both specimens were about this same size, short spines.

Hi John,
This mushroom is very interesting and beautiful. It really resmebles a sea urchin (Echinoderm)or a hedgehog (Erinaceus) and I think you are right on its species ID. Your capture is excellent as usual my friend. TFS.
Cheers,

Bayram

Good exposure and nice sharp image I have never found this genus easy to get a good photo off. You have done well with this one thanks for showing.

Hi John,
Perfect exposure, excellent details on this fungi... TFS, Marta

Nice exposure for such contrasts. Good details and interesting specie. I dared a light adjust to adjust to my taste, hope you don't mind.
Regards, Felipe.
PD: Oops, I don't find the "post to workshop" option, you must have it disabled, so I could not post it.

Hi John,
Interesting subject and not an easy one to photograph, but you’ve handled the whites beautifully, amazing detail, really does remind me of a sea urchin, t.f.s Cheers Rick :)
