Spring Beauties, coming soon to the woods around where I live. These little (3"-6" tall) flowers carpet the deciduous woodland floor in Spring, growing by the thousands. I know that Spring is really here when I see these blooming.

A member of the Portulacaceae, they have leaves that are fleshy, but not to the degree of some of the other members of that family. They grow in woodland, wet to dry, doesn't matter much, although they don't seem to like extremes.

See http://www.illinoiswildflowers.info/woodland/plants/spring_beauty.htm for lots of information about this species here in Illinois.

Hi John,

This is an excelent photo of the flower. You have an amaising DOF givind nice clear details on the whole depth of the flowers. Very good way to show petals texture and pattern. You have captured an very nice light giving vivid color tones. The sharp clear flowers look great on the blurry background.

Thank you for sharing,
Cristian

Hi John,
Nice composition and well framed, good separation from the OOF background, looks like you picked up some digital noise in the blacks, Don't know if you've heard of Neat Image but that's a useful tool for smoothing out some of those problems, Cheers Rick :)

Hi John,
Lovely flower, under exccellent conditions of ligth. Very good POV, but a bit tall BG. I suggest a little crop below, just where there are some noise and blur.
