Yellow trout Lily
 |
|
| [Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note |
Yellow Trout Lily, also known Dogtooth Violet, reportedly because the bulb that it sprouts from resembles the tooth of a dog. However it is not a Violet, rather, it is in the Lily family. The name Trout Lily is of uncertain origin. I've read that it got the name because the spotted leaves resemble the spots on a trout, and have also read that it got the Trout name because it flowers when Trout are spawning. yet another common name, Adder's Tongue, is supposedly a reference to the appearance of the young leaves. I've also seen it referred to as Fawn Lily, presumably because they bloom at a time when fawns are being born, or possibly due to the spotted leaves again.
This flower of the Spring-time woodland is the common Erythronium of eastern North America. Here in the Midwest, E. albidum, which has a white flower tinged with violet, is the common species, and this yellow-flowered species is relatively rare.
It grows in rich woodland soil, often in lower areas, but seems to like well-drained soil and doesn't appear where the soil stays soggy for extended periods.
The flowers in this photo were about 6-8 inches tall. Photographed in Pilcher Park, Joliet, Illinois, USA. |

Bonjour John,
Superbe espèce américaine. En France, nous avons uniquement Erythronium dens-canis, à fleurs roses, et aux feuilles très ressemblantes. j'aime beaucoup les couleurs de l'arrière plan.
