[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
Hepatica acutiloba, another beautiful little woodland wildflower from eastern North America. This species, in the Ranunculaceae, is usually found on the top of bluffs along creek flood plains, at least in this area.

Its flowers can be various colors ranging from pure white through various pastel shades of pink, pin-violet to a moderately dark blue and blue-violet, so a colony of them is quite a sight with flowers of various shades.

Its leaves turn a deep burgundy color later in the year and remain over the Winter. In the Spring, new, fuzzy leaves appear with the flowers.

In the Chicago area, they often bloom in March, but some years may not be seen until early April.

hello Derek,

This is a fine shot! I just love the composition of this shot and the wonderful detail that you have achieved both in the flowers and in the tree bark!
The light is good too, giving a hint of shadows on the tree trunk!

Kind regards,
Bev :-)
