Ohio Spiderwort, Bluejacket, Tradescantia ohiensis, a beautiful flower primarily of prairies and open woodlands. Found roughly in the eastern 2/3 of the United States and into Ontario, Canada.

Kingdom Plantae – Plants
Subkingdom Tracheobionta – Vascular plants
Superdivision Spermatophyta – Seed plants
Division Magnoliophyta – Flowering plants
Class Liliopsida – Monocotyledons
Subclass Commelinidae
Order Commelinales
Family Commelinaceae – Spiderwort family
Genus Tradescantia L. – spiderwort
Species Tradescantia ohiensis Raf. – bluejacket

According to the "Wildflowers of Illinois" site:

"The light violet to blue-violet flowers occur in a small cluster on hairless flowering stems at the top of the plant. Underneath each inflorescence are 2 small bracts, each up to 3" long and less than ½" across. Each flower is about 1" across, with 3 rounded petals, 6 bright yellow anthers, and fine spidery violet hairs near the base. The flowers open up during the morning and close by the afternoon in sunny weather, but remain open longer on cloudy days. There is no floral scent. The blooming period occurs from late spring to mid-summer, and lasts about 1½ months, during which time only a few flowers are in bloom at the same time. The mature seed capsules split into 3 sections, each capsule releasing 3-6 oval to oblong, brown seeds. The root system is thick, fleshy, and fibrous, sending off occasional offshoots nearby."

They usually are solitary plants, but in disturbed areas, particularly along railroads, they sometimes grow in fairly large, spectacular colonies.

John,
Gorgeous photo, very colorful and delicate looking flower. I don't think I've ever run across one of these little beauties. You have captured the fine details extremely well.

Hi John,
very nice macro over this flower. Seems that there was not so much light on that place, but the colours of the picture looks great. Amazing yellows and violets!
I like the POV and DOF over the flower. Seems like a three parts picture: 1) flower, 2) buds, 3) blur BG. It΄s really good!
nice work
Have a nice day
