[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
I'm not 100% sure of the species on this one. Locally, anything like this gets lumped under the name Artomyces pyxidatus (Clavicorona pyxidata in most field guides), the Crown Coral mushroom, but I suspect that we may be lumping more than one species together under that name, so any ideas as to whether this is indeed A. pyxidatus or not would be appreciated. The reason I'm suspecting that this specimen may be a bit different is that the tips are not the typical crowns one usually sees on this species.

Anyway, A. pyxidatus is a common decayer of old, well-decayed hardwood logs, growth is solitary or sometimes found gregariously during rainy spells from Spring through Fall. It's found around the world, Americas, Europe and Asia. If you look closely at it, you'll notice a tiny "crown" at the end of each growing tip, the source of the common name, Crown Coral.

For more information on this attractive mushroom, see Michael Kuo's page at http://www.mushroomexpert.com/artomyces_pyxidatus.html .

Hi John,

I like this composition and colors. I've seen that fungus in Minnesota.

TFS!

Hi John,
What a strange and beautiful mushroom friend. I did not see befero. Really it resembles a coral. Great shot friend. TFS.

Hello John,
I know how difficult it can be to pin down the ID of Artomyces (& Ramariopsis etc)
This is a very interesting close up look at the branches. Always difficult to get good DOF with these I find.
You might like to check out one of my Artomyces shots taken this time last year Artomyces colensoi
Hope you like it.
Cheers
Steve
