[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
Phlox bifida, Cleft Phlox, also known as Sand Phlox. This attractive Spring-time wildflower prefers sunny sites, sandy or gritty soil, and low-growing neighbors who won't shade it much.

Found only in a few states in the central part of the US, this isn't a very common plant, although it is fairly abundant locally in sites that are of suitable habitat. The color of the flowers varies from white to pale blue to occasionally a medium blue or blue violet, but are usually pale blue. It's a sure sign that Spring has arrived and is advancing.

At the site where I photographed these, they are growing in almost pure sand. One of their companions is a Prickly Pear cactus, Opuntia humifusa.

For a more thorough treatment of this species in Illinois, see http://www.illinoiswildflowers.info/prairie/plantx/sand_phlox.htm

Splendid flowers and perfect shot! TFS. Regards,

Hi John,
That's an interesting sp. of Phlox. It is quite different from the Phlox drummondii, the annual Phlox sp. commonly grown in the Indian gardens. Very nice picture of this cluster of flowers.
Thanks a lot for sharing.
