[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
Pennsylvania Leatherwing beetle, a.k.a. Goldenrod Soldier Beetle, Chauliognathus pensylvanicus, Cantharidae family, a very common insect around here, usually seen on plants with yellow flowers, Goldenrod supposedly being a favorite of theirs, as in this photo, although I have seen them on white flowers too. The beetles eat pollen and nectar. It's common to see several of them together on a single clump of flowers.

Used my monopod for this shot. Image has been cropped, sharpened and re-sized for posting here.

Hi John,

Wow, fantastic capture of the leatherwing insect! The colors are so vivid with great details of the body parts of the insect. The sharpness and POV are ideal with nice shallow DOF. The contrast between the yellow flower and the colors of the insect very well here.
Well done!

thanks and regards,
Paras Bhalla

Hi John,
I love this presentation of the Soldier beetle. Golden rod is native to your country, but an invasive plant in Europe, so here on this picture I can enjoy the beauty of the flower without pangs! And I learn something about American beetles. Thanks for all.
Best regards
Dietrich
