Smartweeds, several species in the Polygonum genus, are plants of wetlands, and are often abundant, as well as being somewhat difficult to ID to the species level due to disagreement about species definitions. These were found in an area that is under standing water during late Winter and early Spring, and are apparently very happy there as there are a lot of them.

There's apparently some disagreement among taxonomists as to what defines the genus, some splitting many plants originally in the Polygonum genus off into other genera including Fagopyrum, Fallopia and Persicaria. Depending on how the genus is interpreted, it contains between 65 and 300 species.

Anyway, their fairly inconspicuous flowers can be attractive when blooming en masse, as in this photo.

Great shot John,
I've tried numerous times to get a decent photo of these pretty little plants and it never seems to work out. I can never seem to find clusters arranged the way these ones are growing. The ones I find are always growing haphazardly at different heights and never bunched up this close together.
You managed to get super DOF showing many in excellent focus. The detail is very fine and the colors are right on the money!!
These tiny plants always remind me of the Good-n-Plenty candy we used to get as a kid, because the pink and whitish colors are very similar. TFS.
