A small flower sprouts through the dead weight of fall at Fort Harrison State Park, near Indianapolis. This little hint of spring was a welcome sight as the trees and landscape remain bare from the winter.
UPDATE: Thank you to jpdenk for identifying this as erigenia bulbosa, commonly called "Harbinger of Spring" or "Pepper and Salt". The plant receives is common name as it is "one of the earliest blooming native wildflowers of rich forests in the mid-latitude United States" (Wikipedia). When the pinkish-purple anthers dry, they turn to black, which results in this plant having a "pepper and salt" appearance, hence its other common name.
