This is the second posting of a series of images from my visit to Banning State Park. This is a wider angle shot from the same POV as my previous post.

Geology
The park lies in a shallow, narrow valley worn by the Kettle River. The topsoil is very thin and in the center of the park the river has cut down through Precambrian sandstone known as the Hinckley Formation and on into the bedrock, resulting in a gorge (up to 40 feet tall at Hell's Gate) and 1.5 miles of churning rapids.

The park is also notable for its numerous glacial potholes, smooth shafts scoured into rock. These were formed at the end of the Wisconsin glaciation when the river was swollen by the melting ice, and powerful eddies sent debris swirling around and around, literally drilling shafts into the streambed. The Log Creek Arches in the northern section are potholes whose bottoms have been worn away on one side.

Robinson Ice Cave is a 200 foot deep cave in the bluffs between Wolf Creek Falls and Sandstone. The cave is not open to the public and the entrance is gated to protect the little brown bats, big brown bats, and Keen's myotis bats that hibernate in it. In winter large stalagmites of ice often form on the cave floor, but in a strict sense it is not an ice cave because the ice does not persist year-round.

Below the rapids, the valley once again begins to widen. Away from the river valley, the topography is generally level to gently-rolling glacial till plain.

Richard:
Very nice view. Good composition, the colors capture the time of the season. Ice is starting to break up so the suckers and walleye will be spawning soon.

Hi Richard

A very impressive shot - the frozen river especially. The ice stained with tanin is especially impressive. Lovely forms. Great exposure.

Hello Richard,
I like the composition of this shot of the Kettle River. Great perspective view of both the river and sky to form two meeting cone shapes and a fine diagonal composition in the FG. The snow-covered deciduous trees bending over the river bank is also a nice touch. I guess the brown colour in the ice is due to organic seepage from the surrounding forest, which also colours the water to varying degrees.
Must be a fantastic place for different kinds of wildlife.
Thanks for sharing this one,
Ivan

Great shot! Though the place is beautiful, but I don't think there is that much speciality in this place. But the way you captured it has made it special.Very good work.

Hi Richard, fascinating winter composition with splendid river, excellent exposure, very well done, ciao Silvio

Hello Richard,

My first visit to your gallery and you have beautiful collection of pristine landscapes.

This is beautiful perspective of the river with trees lining up the banks giving depth to the perspective. The snow under the trees blended well with the sandy bank.

Well done!

Jusni

Hello Richard,
Wonderful scene well captured, the Kettle looks like it is a tea colored river. It appears to have a straight run to your point of view which gives this beautiful landscape real depth, thanks Richard.

Hi Richard,

I think I like this one even more than the first! I love the contrast of the colors. A wonderful view of looking down (or up) the river with the ice and snow. The framing of the river by the trees on the banks is excellent.

Jane

I see in this image something I struggle with in every image I process... sharpness.

There is a little haloing here and there showing that you took careful effort to sharpen the image. But even with that it still comes out looking kinda 'unsharp'. It is some kind of contrast issue probably caused by both camera and image editing software. In digital photography image quality is still negatively affected by internal camera processors.

I don't know what to do about that but hope digital cameras continue to evolved to the point that this problem of early digital photography fades as a relict into the past.

Hi Richard, I like the high contrast in this series of pictures, the snow with the dark trees, the dark rocks and the water, it is popping in the eyes. The angle of view is really nice too, as the eyes travel far into the frame, sinuously like the river itself. Everything is super sharp and the little islands of ice in the water are really nice. Thank you!

Francine

Hi Richard,
Very nice pov to see this winding river. The ice and snow add to the beauty of this scene. TFS this well done picture.
JC

Hi Richard,
I think I like this over the previous post..The POV/composition is better, and your FG here makes a big difference..IMHO :)
Very well done,
Howard

Hi Richard,

Lovely composition, great depth of field, my eyes are travelling with a nice curved movement with the river. A well balanced image with beautiful colours. Very well done!

Lise

I really like this image Richard. The composition is wonderful with both the triangle of the sky and the lines of the river leading one deep into the scene. Foreground sharpness is nice as is the exposure and color.

Hi Richard,
Very nice picture with very nice and subtle colors. Great DOF and POV... I may sound a bit silly..but where does it get that yellow color from?
