Thlaspi arvense

| [Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note |
Thlaspi arvense [Cruciferae (Brassicaceae)], commonly known as Pennycress, is a common ruderal annual in the Midwest, a xenophyte that originates from Europe. The plant may reach 45 cm in height. The small (about 5 mm ) flowers are not impressive, but the fruit, shown here, are quite striking. Upon drying the pods become brown and paper-like, showing black seeds, which In the past were used as a black pepper substitute.
The plant is found in Israel (Lower Galilee; Valley of Jesrael), but is very rare here. |
