Hi Scott
So too I have missed you and the other TN friends, not because you were not around, but rather because I was pretty scarce myself. Too many reasons for mentioning all the excuses though, but hopefully I will now have some time again to spend here where I like to be most of all, on TN chatting to my friends and enjoying all the spectacular photos. Btw, good luck with the business and I sincerely hope you make a killing. Sorry, that maybe sounded like the wrong thing to say to an officer of the law.
Reading through your notes made me realise that it must be either brave men, or foolish men, who would wander off the beaten track on horse back in any area where these guys are to be found. Maybe that is the reason why they are on horse back though. If Mr. Bear comes around to catch them they could always tie the horse to a tree so that the bear can focus on the horse while they (the brave cowboys) make a hasty disappearance. Although, this guy looks like he would not waste the energy to run after anything, but perhaps the Zoo keeper who brings his food.
A lovely capture with great composition and POV. I just love the curtain of water in the BG. The colours are splendid, the details are razor sharp, and the lighting was perfectly controlled.
Very well done and TFS.
Regards

Hi Scott, missing you too and many of the other 'oldies'!! Life isn't the same without you all! And at time I feel like this dear old fellow looks.
It's a lovely capture of the grizzly, even his eye-brow hairs around his eye stand out.
And good luck with your new business - go fo it!

Hi Scott
Very nice to hear from you again, my friend!
I'm glad things are looking good for you and that you are finally making some money for some new equipment...can't wait to see what you'll buy and what results you'll have with it :)
Meanwhile, i just hope you have some free time...not much...but just enough for a small trip or even outing to take your mind off tihngs and give you some shooting chances. I know you'll like that :)
This is a lovely portrait! The bair looks a little said...i hoe it doesn't reflect your mood. I know you've missed TN and we sure missed you, but it's easy to understand why you were absent these past few weeks (not that you would need a reason...).
Anyway, in etrms of tech-talk, i really like the POV of this shot and the look in the subject's eyes.
All the details and natural colors are great and the waterfall behind it really enhances the overall compo.
Cheers and TFS

Hi Scott,
Appologies accepted.:) Especially for the reason why. I think you made a really good move to become a part time pro. I hope all the best and that at sometimes I can see some of your wonderful work outside TN and TL.
This is another marvelous photo with such razor sharp details and such a wonderful intimate pose. It's the human like expression that makes this perfect. I also like the BG a lot, it is the slightly blurry water that gives the back a nice peacefull feel.
TFS,

That explains your infrequent interaction on TN these last few weeks, Scott. You were reasonably busy for a right cause which, I am sure, everyone will appreciate.
I wish you all the best in your venture.
Coming to the picture, it is a wonderful portrait of a Grizzly looking so very quiet, calm and reflective.
Thanks for sharing the picture and best regards.

Hello Scott,

Hello Scott,
This picture was very well chosen to convey what the title says! The bear really looks like he's missing someone or something. Maybe freedom! It was a great surprise to find this picture in your gallery as I encountered a mother bear with her cub two days ago in the woods around our studio. I managed a few good shots from about 10 m safe distance and will soon post them.
It is great to have you back on TN, especially with such a great photo. I would also wish you good luck with your new side job!
Here is my critique:
Composition:
I like the simplicity of this composition. There is nothing to distract from the emotions that the bear is showing. You picked the best place to position the bear's face which is the most important element in the composition. The blurred waterfall is an excellent background to isolate the subject! Very well done!
Colors:
The excellent, natural colors of your subject are so familiar to me now. Saturation was adjusted very well!
Contrast:
I find it difficult to adjust the contrast correctly as I tend to get underexposed shadows in the fur. You did a great work here my friend!
Exposure:
Outstanding exposure to preserve the details in the shadows of the dark fur! You used a pretty long shutter speed for such a focal length. You must have a very steady hand for photography if this was taken handheld.
Focus:
The bear is in sharp focus and the details look accordingly! I could count the hairs in the fur if I cared. There is no sharpness fall-off on the subject thanks to a small f/11 aperture. Great camera work!
A very good picture with well documented notes! Congratulations! Thanks for sharing!
With Friendly Regards,
Eddie

""A grizzly bear can sprint 30 to 35 miles an hour over short distances -- faster than many horses.""
Yup Scott sometimes I wonder why rangers go into the woods on horseback!
I recall getting booted away by a warden who told us that the grizzly that we were admiring was "cranky"... The wardens had been trying to move this berrypickin' munchin' crunchin' ursus on by firing rubber bullets [RBs] at its rump!
Well no kidding buddy, I would be cranky too after a few arbies!
Your horribilis looks like a pussycat that has quite running... Sad to see what results zoos have. Cute lil ears though! Given the size of the grizzly's head, I said that tongue in cheek. Tfs, Jay
PS I miss my friends too; any absence seems to result in lack of contact(s). But there are times when there is no choice... :-(

Hello Scott! I have been a bit absent of late also, and feel the same emptiness without all my friends here to chat with daily. I love this bear pose, so calm and serene, yet so deadly to encounter in the wild. I did know about how fast they can run, you can't outrun them on horseback unless you're going down a steep hill where you might have a slight advantage because of their massive size. It always amazed me why they show people running away from them in the movies since it's impossible!!
WEll done capturing this wonderful animal, and good luck in your new business!
