I can also admire the pose & POV in this close-up portrait Scott :)
You nailed the exposure with perfect fill flash. Although shade can often complicate the capture, in this case the softer light has helped to produce even tones of color, and made the whites look great ;)
Very nice detail, sharpness, and the BG colors compliment the subject well also..
Very well done.

Excellent light, POV and expression on this Euro-Barn Owl's face. Simply an amazing shot. Of course, Canon's are the best camera. You have done well and I have marked this a favorite. :)

This is a nice portrait of my favorite owl. You managed great exposure on all that white. Great detail and sharpness. That is a popular lens you use...I guess for good reason.

Hi Scott
When I was a young boy about 10 years old we visited my grandmother after she moved to a new house in Newcastle where she had this massive oak tree in the back yard. It wasn’t long before I made myself comfortable in the tree pretending to be some sort of noteworthy primate (which I probably was not far off at that age). There in the tree I found a young barn owl and the hunter in me took relentless control. Eventually I got hold of the obviously displeased owl and while I was busy climbing down from about 15m+ up in the tree the darn barn owl showed his opinion about being captured and started to bite and scratch at me. Somewhat surprised my concentration and my foot, hand, eye co-ordination went for a bum loop that caused me to take a classic dive for which Mark Spits would have envied me. About 2m above ground level was this thick horizontal branch that was there for only one reason and that was to break 3 of my ribs. Shocked and in pain I tumbled down further to the ground, but I never let go of that darn owl. My father thought it wise to confiscate the owl and donated it to a Bird Park sanctuary near by. Many years after that incident I would still visit the sanctuary to say hello to MY owl. Although somewhat misguided at the time, I think this was where my love for nature started, but I did not grow into loving nature, I FELL in love with nature.
Back to your bird. A fine specimen and very well captured and presented by you. All the tech stuff is well in place. The composition is great and since the bird is looking to its left there is no problem that the cropping left little space on the left of the photo. The colours are natural (I know because I saw one from very close quarters), the details and contrasts are absolutely stunning, the BG is perfect, and the exposure with the fill-in flash was expertly managed.
Very well done and TFS.
Regards
Loot

Hi Scott.
What a perfect portrait of this wonderful owl. Quality of your work is amazing. Reflection of the feathers, owl mood and impression of the eyes, delicate lighting and perfect colours are really outstanding as well as the composition of the picture. I like counter movement of a body of a bird and its sight very much. POV and DOF are selected extremely well. BRAVO. Great portrait work.

Cordialmente... Ricardo
Another excellent post Scott with great point of view in harmony with the elected framing.
The beautiful colors and details of the bird are enhanced by the great contrast with the ideal bottom for their diffusion and coloring.
The focus very centered on the eyes of the bird and that it embraces correctly the entirety of their image.
Cordially... Ricardo

Hi Scott,
Wonderful portrait. You even managed to maintain some detail in the white feathers, which is tough to do with a flash close up.
You might want to see if you can bring up a little bit more detail in the eyes.

And Scott you captured that well in this shot.
