I was somewhere between Sandusy Bay and Fremont Ohio when I noticed this Great Egret standing in a marshy area along the road. I was on a fairly busy streach of road but I turned the car around at the first opportunity, rolled down the passenger side window and drove back to the spot.
I tried several times to get a quick shot of the bird, but inevitably a car would come up behind me and I would have to take off again. After several attempts I managed to slow down just enough to make the bird nervous and it took off. I had no time to compose this shot, I just clicked and hoped for the best.
I wouldn't advise this method to anyone in order to get a photo. I'm just glad the cops weren't around or I might have been pulled over.

The Great Egret nests in colonies, many times with other herons of the same species. It lays from 3 to 5 blue-green eggs on a platform of sticks in a tree or bush.
Their numbers plummeted in years past due to plume hunters, but has since rebounded. They usually feed on fish, frogs, snakes and other aquatic life.

I have the same luck here as I did where you took this image. There is no place to pull off really...no real berm...and narrow road...Can you see the RR bridges from where you were at? A nice image and taken just as I would have...My wife would look in the rear view and let me know..but somehow folks coming along behind seem to know when to come and just going so fast..I have a stick shift so I hare to have all sorts of my own personal memory banks going...Good shot under extreme conditions!

perfect shot Ron, nice...

Ah, don't put this down to a lucky shot Ron, this is awesome! I like your drive by shooting, you've caught this guy perfectly. I like the composition with the diagonal across your frame, you have excellent stopped action on him and your exposure was bang on. I see a bit of a pan going on with the background brush, but the bird is in great focus. The brush just adds to the sense of motion. It's all very nice.

Thanks, John

Hi Ron
This is a great shot. It is hard to get close to these birds and to do so in adverse and adrenalin pumping circumstances is great.
Cheers
Sue

Hi Ron,

Good note, interesting technique. ;-) I've noticed that birds are often less shy if you're in your car, I've thought of trying some in-car photography myself, mainly for raptors that sit along back roads near my house.

You got a nice composition, but the sharpness has suffered a bit, as might be expected under the circumstances.

Thanks,
John

Hi Ron,

The risks we take to get a good picture!! Can't do here what you did - not on the backroads with curve after curve and no way to get out of the one lane. You got a great shot of this Egret taking off. Nice position and great details of his face. I love the natural setting for the background.

Jane

A fine capture of an egret-in-flight from a nice, lateral POV Ron, the BG is a little noisy but the perfectly frozen Egret is in good detail, TFS my friend.

Hello Ron,

Very nice capture of this Egret in flight, nice warm colors
and clarity... Well done

Everton

Hello Ron,
Nice in flight shot, good composition and point of view, nice sharpness and depth of field, beautiful colors, i feel the white is a bit overexposed but great capture anyway.
