[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
This is an American Coot, Fulica americana, a member of the rail family. It seems to work fairly hard to become airborne, but has considerable stamina once in the air.
Their breeding habitat is marshes from southern Quebec to the Pacific coast of North America and as far south as northern South America. In recent years, Coots have begun migration to and from breeding ranges about two weeks earlier than they did 100 years ago, perhaps reflecting a warmer climate.
This was taken at the former site of a nuclear weapons facility known as Fernald. The site was a uranium foundry that operated from 1951 to 1989. More than $4 billion was spent removing contaminated materials from the 1000 acre site. Today, the only buildings standing include a LEED platinum nature center and structures associated with environmental monitoring.

really a great picturization of trailing edges.

Hi Greg,

Impressive gerat action and amusing capture of a coot runnin on water surface:) from nice POV with nice DOF and delightful composition.
Since i am in journey and have limited internet connection, sorry i could not write more.
Take care! Cheers,

Bayram

A fine, dynamic capture of a Coot at take off Greg, you've used the best possible exp. time here so the "footsteps" on water are finely frozen while the bird conveys the feeling of movement nicely. Good job and TFS.

Hahahahaaaaa, that's fantastic, I love this funny moment, Greg, very well done, thanks

Hy Greg
Funny, but in the same time very well captured: in fact, the bird itself is not really perfectlly captured, but the "footprins" on the water are extraodinary. It is a piece of animal behaviour. Congratuletion for this.
Kind regards, Oana
