[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
Not to be confused with either Prairie Dock, or sunflowers, Silphium laciniatum (the Compass Flower) is common on the Midwestern prairie. But the flowers are smaller than sunflowers and unlike Prairie Dock, the stems of the compass flower are hairy ones.

The common name of the Compass Flower derives from their tendency to align their foliage north and south to present the minimum surface to the hot summer sun.

The species is versatile and resilient -- and was helpful as a wayfinder plant for early settlers traversing the American plains.

For more information, see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Silphium_laciniatum and http://www.dnr.wi.gov/org/caer/ce/eek/veg/plants/compass.htm.

This is nice Jim. It has real impact when opening from the thumbnail. The sharpness and colors are wonderful against the softer background.

That's a beautiful yellow. Nice details also. It does look a lot like the sunflower. Exposure on this photo is very good. Very interesting note. I had never seen the compass flower.

Bonsoir Jim,
Beautiful flower well composed, nice colours and sharpness, excellent POV. and note..
Well done.

First thing that hits me after being drawn in by the color yellow,is the fine detail in the green...and the hairs as well. Very crisp. You are pushing the limits of your camera good.

Hi Jim,

I apologise for my long absence. The hectic pace of life leaves one little time for relaxation and hobbies.

I really like this picture. Good detail and BG. Well done.

It's a cool morning in Central Texas so this bright photo jumped out at me from your gallery. What great lighting and color - exceptional sharpness! Lovely!!!
