The Dark Fishing Spider, Dolomedes tenebrosus, slightly tentative ID, but I'm sure it's a Dolomedes, pretty sure it's tenebrosus, but corrections are welcome.
Dolomedes is a genus of spiders that typically live near water, where they catch their prey. Thanks to special hairs on their feet and ventral surfaces, they can run across the surface of the water and may dive under to escape danger. They eat insects, small fish and anything else they can kill. I've seen a photo of one with a small Anole lizard that it had caught. They don't use webs to catch their prey, instead they run it down like Wolf Spiders.
The spider in this photo had a body that was probably just over an inch in length with a very impressive leg span.
Photographed near Merrill, Wisconsin on the bank of the Wisconsin River. |

Hello John,
Well captured spider in natural environment. The black contrasting well with the dy color of the ground. Thanks for sharing this one and wonderful notes too.
Well done and best regards,
Jusni

Hello John,
Nice picture of this spider. Good POV, DOF and focus. Nice natural colours. I could not see it in the museum in Brussels, so, I can see it now.
Cheers,
Mariki
that's one mean looking predator, good focus on the subject
