I went for a walk down by the creek tonight just to see what I could find to photograph. I saw this white moth which I believe is a Yellow Woolly Bear Moth.
Now to anyone who doesn't live in Ohio this probably doesn't mean much, but to a North Eastern Ohio Buckeye this isn't just any old moth, it's from a Wooly Bear Caterpillar!!!
Vermilion Ohio holds what's claimed to be the largest one day festival in the state, in honor of the Wooly Bear Caterpillar. It's hosted by a local weather station meteorologist, who promotes this event every year during his nightly TV. broadcast.
In case you think I'm pulling your leg, just check it out for yourself on the web at Wooly Bear Caterpillar Festival.

Hi Ron
This is a great close up. Very good exposure on the white. This stands out great on the green. And you captured a very nice soft back ground. Sharpness and detail are excellent. Very well done!!

Hello Ron,
An amazing image.
The exposure on the white is perfect... giving the wings of the moth a satiny look, with just the right light.
Great pose and POV.

Hello Ron,
Excellent presentation of this moth. Excellent composition, POV, DOF and sharpness. Very good exposure and great natural colours.
Cheers,

ahhh Vermillion eh? Not far from my home...My parents used toown one acre there. They bought it for 1 dollar:-) Let's say that wasa loooooong time ago.
Dick Goddard was the man right? I watched him for years..As a matter of fact I played folk music with a group I formed from CCC (Cuyahoga Community College) on KYW where he worked in 1964 before going to WJW. And it was his knowledge of the Woolly Bear that gave me such an interest in weather. He is an icon in the industry of weather and in this small way in nature.
A wonderful image Ron...and in a round about way a fine tribute to Dick! Your colours are true...with the white showing so well. A hard colour to get spot on...and the overall image is very sharp...a remarkable shot and a good eye/talent you have...

Hi Ron,
An excellent macro, what a beauty! Really sharp, good exposure too, didn't blow out any highlights on this white beauty. And a nice composition too.
I just looked this one up in my caterpillar book, and as you said, this looks to be the Yellow Bear, Spilosoma virginica, but its caterpillar is not the "classic" Woolly Bear caterpillar. The "'real" Woolly Bear species is Pyrrharctia isabella.
Thanks,
John
Hi Ron,
Great work. Excellent exposure and surprising DOF @ F/5.6
Well composed close frame with nice color...the green leaf contrasts to your moth well also.
