Virginia Rose
Rose Family: Rosaceae
Cuba Marsh.. Lake County Forest Preserve of Illinois
I just liked the sunlight on the shrub as I came upon onto the rose shrub making way out of the marshes past the oak tree forest which was filled with little oak tree seedlings.
If you ask me personally after the rain the colors of the leaves and petals are more prominent than in full sunlight in this image the light is falling towards the back of the shrub.
The bushy shrub itself can grow from 1 ft. to 6ft in height (2.5cm – 180cm), the stem are hairy and have scattered stout curved thorns.
The flowers are pink and about 2”- 3” (5-7.5 cm) wide with five petals and stamens are numerous in yellow. They also sweetly fragrant.
Leaves are divided into 5 – 9 dark green, shiny, smooth, oval shaped and toothed leaflets, size of leaves: 1 – 1 ½” (2.5 – 6.3 cm) long, the wing shaped leafstalks are narrow and flaring. Leaves change color to yellow and red in fall.
The shrub also contains the fruit known as the Rosehip used for remedies and tea, rich in vitamin C and also used for jams.
The dark red colored fruit can also be eaten as is.
Flowering time is from June thru August, the pink flowers can be in different shades of pink from light to dark and will fade throughout the season as they wilt away.
Habitat: thickets, clearings and shores , trailsides, roadsides, it likes moist soil, clay rich soil and a sunny location. |

Beautiful shot of this wild rose Gerda,
Great colours and very sharp detail. Love the crisp look to your photo! Composed very well!!
Ron
Bonjour Gerda,
