[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
Asclepias tuberosa interior, Butterfly Weed, a plant of open, sunny fields and prairies, common in many places, but long extirpated in most of its original sites around the Chicago area and now found mainly in dry, sandy sites. It formerly occurred in all types of mesic-to-dry prairie here including black-soil and clay prairies. Currently, very little native prairie remains here, of any type.

This one was photographed at the 640 acre (and soon to be bigger) Bartel Grassland Restoration Project site in southern Cook County, where I do volunteer work. We've been spreading seed and planting plugs of many native prairie plants since 2002, and we are finally starting to see more and more native plant species beginning to show up, and this summer is the first time that this beautiful native Milkweed has bloomed there probably since some time in the 19th century, so I had to share this here.

Butterfly Weed is one of the Milkweed species that Monarch butterflies like for laying their eggs on and also as a nectar source for the adults. Unlike most species of Asclepias, this plant does not have milky sap.

I shot this with my D70 and Sigma 150mm F2.8 APO Macro DG HSM lens on a Giotto monopod.

Hi John,

Amazing colours its had to believe this is classified as a weed, but its good to read that there are some who take pride in the environment and are helping to restore our native plant species, a well composed shot with excellent detail, stands out well against the OOF background, all the best,

Cheers Rick :)

Many congratulations on both your flower and your Senator for his speech. I try to remember where folks are from and their specialty....nice image!

Hi John,
What a wonderful delicate flower. it orange color is, especially for a Dutchy, is very beautiful and the details you managed to capture are stunning. I really like the lighting in this photo. I do think that when you would have used a even smaller aperture the flowers in the back would be sharp as well.
TFS,
Niek

nice close up , great natural light, greetings Ori

Hello John. Excellent species from the Restoration Project land. Beautiful small flowers in contrasting orange colors. I like the lightness of the image that you have framed beautifully. Informative notes and TFS. Have a nice weekend. Jusni

Hello John,

Excellent picture of these beautiful flowers. The POV and DOF are very good to have almost the cluster of flowers entirely sharp. Great light and splendid bright colours.

Many thanks fro sharing this!
Cheers,

Beautiful image John,
I saw my first butterfly weed this spring at Killbuck Marsh. They were the same color as yours, so maybe there is no variation in their colors.
Very nice DOF showing the fine details of such a pretty plant. I like your exposure and good use of natural lighting.
I didn't realize they were a type of milkweed plant. I guess I didn't pay too much attention to the leaf structure of the ones I saw at Killbuck. Well done!! Great notes!!

Bonjour John,
Très belle macro, bien composée, et dans laquelle le sujet est remarquablement mis en valeur par la finesse des détails et la délicatesse des couleurs avec une très bonne maitrise de la lumière.
A bientôt sur TN pour de nouvelles aventures.
