[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
Painted Lady, Vanessa cardui, a medium-sized, pretty butterfly, quite abundant during late summer and into early autumn, in the proper setting. I visited the Bartel Grassland this morning, and there were literally clouds of butterflies of at least 6 species around the Burr Marigolds that are now almost solid masses of yellow in the low spots.

The adults of this species don't survive sub-freezing temperatures, so where I live, we have to wait for them to disperse north from winter refuges in areas far enough south for them to survive the winter.

Their larval food plants are Thistles, Mallows and many others.

I've uploaded a workshop version showing a more traditional composition showing the butterfly with spread wings.

Hello John,

Excellent capture of this Vanessa. Very good composition. Excellent POV which allows to see both side of the wings. Great sharpness. Superb colours. I saw one today but it was always moving, I could not take a picture of it.

The Painted Lady has to be one of my favorites as far as beautiful coloration. Lovely composition showing the inside and outside wing coloring. Wonderful detail with good DOF. Like the OOF BG. it highlights your image! Well done!!

peut etre qu'un peu plus de contraste aurait amelioré l'image mais elle est deja pas mal comme cela avec une bonne netteté et un MAP bien placée sur l'oeil du sujet.
