[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
While driving along Tappan Lake, Rosie and I kept noticing large bunches of purple flowers that lined the roadside along route 250 adjacent to the lake.

We pulled over and I took some shots, but I really couldn't identify the plant. After much searching I checked out mywildflowers.com on the internet and found their identity.

They are an invasive species that apparently has invaded this area of the state. This is just one of many types of invasive species that compete for space with native plants here in Ohio


Tufted Vetch Vicia cracca, also occasionally known as Cow Vetch or Bird Vetch, is a common species of vetch is not native throughout North America, but native in Europe and Asia. It occurs in grassy fields and meadows, and roadside ditches.
Tufted Vetch is similar to a pea in growth habit, sending out noose-like tendrils from the tips of its leaves when it contacts another plant and securely fastens itself. This can cause "strangling" of smaller plants. An individual plant may reach a length (or height) of 2 m and its tap root may extend up to 1 m. The leaves are 3-8 cm long, pinnate, with 8-12 pairs of leaflets, each leaflet 5-10 mm long.

Hi Ron

Great shot of the invader. Its interesting who so many invasive plants are attractive to look at. Maybe that's an adaptation they use to their advantage.
