I walked behind the house this morning in hopes of getting a few shots off before I had to go in to work. I spotted this pretty little Painted Lady cruising the neighbors clover field.

Today was a fairly good day for taking photos since the sun would occasionally go behind the clouds and give me some pretty decent lighting. There was just a faint breeze which would die down eventually in order for me to take some shots.

The one problem I face almost daily is wind. I live on top of a hill where there is wide open fields to my west. The wind blows eastward most of the time which is a real challenge when trying to focus in on either flowers or insects that are weaving back and forth in the breeze.

The American Painted Lady (V. virginiensis) is most easily distinguishable by its two large hindwing eyespots on the ventral side. virginiensis also features a white dot within the subapical field of the forewings set in pink on the ventral side, and often as a smaller clean white dot in the orange of the dorsal side too. A less reliable indicator is the row of eyespots on the dorsal submarginal hindwing; virginiensis often has two larger outer spots with blue pupils. The black forewing tips have 4--5 white spots, usually the largest is whitish orange.

Hallo Ron
How beautiful is the sight of this sunny picture on this very cold and rainy day here in South Africa. The natural colours and details captured and displayed is very eye-catching and striking. It is an image filled with warmth and no pretence. This is indeed a beautiful butterfly with lovely markings and patterns, which you have photographed well, and which is a delight to look at. Your subjects, both the butterfly and the flower are well focused and sharp and the details are equally highlighted by the blurred background. Thanks for sharing. It was a pleasure to stop by such a beauty. Best regards.
Anna

An interesting picture made more so by your detailed description. We have Painted Lady in the UK and it has been interesting to compare the two species. Very well taken, the light is superb.

Hi Ron,

Great macro shot of the American Painted Lady!
The colors are very natural with great sharpness and from nice POV. The textures on the wings of the butterfly are indeed amazing. The positioning of the flower into the picture is just perfect. I like the blurred BG. Great job!

Thanks for sharing!

Hi Ron,

That's a beauty! Good sharpness and detail with bright colors, very nice shot! Nice sunlight, makes for a more cheerful-looking photo, although I do also like the soft, even light on overcast days, especially for flowers.

I haven't seen this species yet, I'll have to watch for them. The Painted Lady I see around here is the one that occurs all over the world, Vanessa cardui.

I got out yesterday, went to the grassland restoration site that I do volunteer work at, about 2 miles south of my home, saw very few butterflies, probably because it was cloudy and windy with rain threatening. I did scare up a couple Monarchs that were hunkered down in the grass, but they weren't doing any nectaring, just went back down a few yards away.

Thanks,
John

Beautiful Ron. Almost if not perfect. What a nice combination of colours and perches/butterfly.... Wonderful work with your depth of focus. Looks to me like you have that down pat...but for an old film guy I shoulda known!
