I had just gotten done taking a photo of a mushroom when I looked up and saw this adult Whitetail Doe staring at me. I suppose she was wondering what I was doing lying on the damp ground and holding a strange object that produced a flash like a bolt of lightening.

I originally had the camera on a tripod just a foot or so from the ground, so I had to slowly remove it and take a quick shot. I was able to get off only this one picture before she snorted and took off into the thicket behind her.

I'm amazed at the population explosion we have had here in Ohio from the Whitetail Deer. When I was a kid it was a rare occasion to even spot a deer, but that has changed drastically over the years.

Ohio has an estimated deer population of over 600,000 compared to 150,000 just twenty years ago. Deer-car collisions are rising every year. In 2005 we had over 27,000 collisions, costing nearly 71 million dollars.

I still get a thrill every time I see one of these beautiful animals, even though that sighting is not nearly as rare as it used to be.

Hi Ron,

Nice shot of the doe, she posed nicely, and the woodland surroundings are the perfect frame for her.

I don't know if people feed the deer by you, but they do here, and I occasionally have deer approach me in anticipation of being fed when I'm out in the woods. Feeding deer is a very bad thing as it helps keep their numbers way too high. In Illinois, their numbers were so low in the first half of the 20th century that hunting them was illegal, now we have an estimated 800,000 of them. In the Chicago area, it's still illegal to hunt them except for a few small parts of local state parks, doesn't even put a small dent in the deer population. The deer are devastating the local nature preserves, eating lots of rare wildflowers, not to mention making flower gardening very difficult for people who live near the deer, like me. I have deer in my yard probably every night, we're filthy with them here as I'm almost right across the street from a large Cook County Forest Preserve. While I really like living in such close proximity to nature, it does have its down side too.

Hi Ron,

I haven't seen a deer all summer. They move up in the mountains to escape the heat. It's so nice to see one in such pretty green surroundings instead of dry brush. They do make wonderful models - always seem to stop and pose so you just have to take their pictures. I guess ours will return in November.
