I took a walk this evening in the woods behind the house and came upon these two pretty red mushrooms. Thanks to John Denk for his help, I believe they may be some type of Hygrocybe, .

They were growing in a very dark section of the woods, and were about the size of the end of your pinky finger. The undergrowth was very dense, so I had to do some cleaning up around the area in order to get this shot.

Hi Ron,

Wow, what little beauties! Spectacular color, excellent exposure, sharpness and composition.

No, they're not Russulas, quite different actually, as Russulas are short, relatively squat things, not shiny, with fairly robust stalks that are not fibrous. If you break a Russula stalk it breaks cleanly, like a piece of chalk, an easy test to tell if you have a Russula, or a Lactarius, but the Lactarius will ooze latex when it's broken (usually).

I'm pretty sure that you have a Hygrocybe of some sort, not sure which species off-hand.

Hello Ron
punto di vista molto interessante per catturare questi Hygrocybe dai colori molto insoliti. Ottima la luce e la nitidezza dei dettagli il tutto ben curato in una composizione ben studiata.

Hi Ron,

A marvelous find. I have never seen red mushrooms. Does the color mean they are poisonous? A nice clear shot with wonderful colors and details. Great macro - hard to believe they are so small.
