This image was captured near Two Lights State Park in Cape Elizabeth, when the sun was less than one diameter above the horizon.
It shows the quintessential Maine coast, but at a time of day usually missed by tourists. A few gulls warm themselves on the rocks. Others hunt for breakfast, hoping for crabs or mussels pounded loose by the waves. The surf foam is rosy pink from the newly risen sun.
The wave sounds are chaotic but rhythmic, abrupt but soothing. Hearing the surf crash and swish across the rocks is a tonic against the modern world. Rarely can you be so close to human civilization, but so far away at the same time, able for a brief time to deny its very existence.
Sunrise along the Maine coast is the best time for photography. The low lighting angle brings the surf to life and gives depth to the rocks. Colors appear for a scant few minutes, then fade until the next clear morning. This image is a reminder that the light itself can be as much of a subject in a composition as any physical object.
Tech note- no filtration, but slight PS increases in contrast and overall color saturation. |
