This is an essential companion to ice art 2, not just because it is a shot of ice on the same window pane (it is), but because it was taken 2 weeks later, after many freeze-thaw cycles! In between these two days there was always frost on the glass, but nothing worth shooting.

This fantastic layer of crystals would have been amazing anyway, but coming after that two weeks of mundane frost, it was astonishing. When I lifted the window shade and saw the familiar stalk-like growth pattern, I was torn between incredulous gawking and running downstairs for my camera. So I did both.

The same dark spot pattern as in ice art 2 baffles me. Obviously there is some reason for the similarity, but it must be buried at a lower level than I can hope to see. I can at least suggest a partial explanation for the growth from the lower right corner. The origin for both patterns is a few cm from a 3 mm vent hole to the outside. I suspect that slow air transfer through that hole has something to do with the growth.

I used the same approach to both image capture and PS processing as for ice art 2, except that the sun had just cleared the trees and was hitting the window for this one. The lighting changes everything photographically and blots out some detail, but it's still an interesting shot.

I'm waiting for serious cold to see if we can get a reincarnation of last winter's artwork.
