[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
A cluster of cherries glued together?

No, just a raspberry.

The individual lobes, called drupelets, are actually independent fruits within the berry, each growing from its own flower. The small fibers which look like cherry stems are the dried flower parts of each drupelet. These are present on any fresh raspberry, but are barely visible as a few tiny fibers, dark against the red berry. Additionally, most people are understandably focused on eating the berry rather than examining its fine structure.

That fine structure is visible here partly because of shooting in supermacro mode and partly because of backlighting, The lens to berry distance was roughly 5 to 7 mm, so the small details are picked up easily. The primary illumination was from inside the berry, so the flower parts are nicely silhouetted. The berry was placed on a mini-MagLite flashlight, inverted directly over the small bulb (the threads of the flashlight body are visible where the lens housing has been removed). The room lights were dimmed to keep reflected light to a minimum. The resulting transillumination is similar to that for my recent post "sweet maple light".

As a scientist and photographer, I'm keenly aware of the difference between reflected and transmitted light, which is obviously why I took this shot. But the result still surprised me, showing some interesting new colors not normally associated with raspberries.

Tech notes-
shot from minipod using self-timer
minor PS processing- slight contrast and brightness adjustment
no color modification at all
lighting by flashlight with 2 to 3 mm diameter incandescent bulb, powered by two AA batteries
total height of berry about 2 cm

Interesting image Bob,
Your right they do look like cherries all stacked up on top of each other.
The way the colours seem to glow and the tiny hairlike stems are really neat looking.
I'll remember this pic the next time I'm out in the woods and pick one for a snack.
Ron
