Snowy Egret taken at Southaven Park in Shirley New York.

Habitat: Marshes, swamps, ponds, lakes, shallow coastal areas and tidal flats; occasionally found in dry fields.
Weight: Up to 13 ounces.
Length: 20-27 inches.
Wingspan: 41 inches. Life Expectancy: In captivity, snowy egrets have lived over 16 years of age.
Food: Fishes, shrimp, crayfish, fiddler crabs, snakes, snails, aquatic and terrestrial insects, small lizards, young frogs and aquatic vegetation.
Status: State threatened.

Identification: The snowy egret is a medium-sized, white heron with a slender, black bill, black legs and yellow feet. The area of the upper bill, in front of the eyes, is yellow but turns red during the breeding season. Showy, recurved plumes are present on the back during the breeding season. The snowy egret is much smaller than the great egret.

Range: The snowy egret occurs from the United States and southern Canada, south through Central America, the West Indies, South America, and Argentina. In eastern North America, snowy egrets winter along the Gulf Coast and in Florida, as well as north along the Atlantic Coast to New Jersey. The breeding range in eastern North America extends along the Atlantic and Gulf Coasts from Maine to Texas, and inland along major rivers and lakes.

Hi Angela,
this is a very lovely subject to have been able to get a photo of and one with good detail and colour. It is a clean shot given that the iso was so very high, the graininess is slight but as you know it would be better to use a slower or lower iso but with the f-stop you used that wouldn't work out so well.F/13 in my opinion was more field of depth needed for this shot as a more open aperture like f/8 would of been better as then you could go with a lower iso then and maybe get a faster shutter speed to boot which helps in any handheld blurriness that might result. Each change up in f/stop lets in half as much light as the previous lower number f/stop and then the shutter speed needs to be longer for a good exposure.I hope that you are enjoying your new 40D camera as it is fun to use and have you tried the live view feature yet,I think it is a boon for macro shots. Thanks for this wonderful Egret. Bob

Hello Angela. Beautiful shot at this graceful white snowy Egret. Beautiful texture especially the tail in excellent sharpness and detail. Thanks for sharing and best regards. Jusni

Hi Angela, very nicely done. This is a tough shot with a white bird like this, but you've managed the the light on it and the rest of the scene very well. Composition is very good, and I like the natural look, with him wading through that shallow water. Detail, especially on the birds head is very good.

Thanks, John

Hi Angelina,
I never had the chance to see this elegant bird in real. I think that you manage well with exposure and composition. Details are also good, especially on its foot and tail. Its head could have been a little sharper IMHO, it seems that focus was on another part. Anyway, this is a beautiful capture of this nice bird in its natural environment. Thanks,
Claudine

This looks like an excellent day for a walk in the pond for this Snowy Egret! I love how he has one webbed foot can be seen emerging from the water as he is in the process of taking another step. I love the grace in which he moves.
