Very good picture... colours aver very surprising, in france, dragonfly of same species are red, yellow or blue. Brightness, contrast and sharpness are excellent.

I'm glad you had a terrific trip and also that you finally realized your dream and bought a superb equipment! I wish you all the best with it and may you take thousands of brilliant picture with it.
I see you aquired a great new model of a body - the 40D - which i heared it's really fast and good and also a suprb lens with the great benefit of a IS. Good choises!!! Did you get any other lenses, too?
Before i comment on your shot, i just want to say that the .cr2 will only work with Canon's software, but it's actually a great one and very easy to use. I'm just learning to "play" with it, too, but i love how it handles :)

Now for this other premiere: this charming dragonfly!
I really like the diagonal composition you managed to get here as well s the very good DOF - f/11 - that you used in order to get the entire insect in full focus. It's a little different from the S2, huh? :))
The exposure values are also great and because of that we can all enjoy all these vivid and beautiful colors of the dragonfly and the BG, too.
Splendid shot for a first one!

Wow! What a fantastic shot!!! I remember taken a picture of a Roseate Skimmer during my vacation in Dominican Republic in 2004 but I didn't get such a masterpiece like yours! Colors are amazing and the square composition works very well here.

Gusto mucho those great details within the wings...

So, you switch to the Canon 40D? I'm looking to swicth to the same camera next spring with a Canaon 100-400 IS USM lens to photography birds... For now I will stay with my Panasonic FZ-20 bridge for insects because I like the DOF I can obtain with it...

Which camera have you in the past? I'm a little bit worrying also about the weight... My Panasonic is so light...

Do you have more comments about the 40D? Personally I continue to be hesitating between JPEG and RAW... Do you see a real difference between both?

First of all I congratulate you on your new "big" camera and other proper equipment. It is cool. Your camera is really great. And you will get used and love it so quickly. I am sure. I see your photo model is so fine as your equipment. I think it had decided to help you to represent your new toys. Amazing dragonfly, fine colour patter, nice pose and superb details. Te felicito cordialmente por esta tu primera libélula (yo aún no he conseguido fotografiar ninguna, aunque lo he intentado un par de veces). Es una auténtica joya. Un magnífico primer plano con una excelente calidad y preciosa composición. Me encantan esos colores malvas y rosados.
Enhorabuena por tu nueva cámara, pero ¿qué pasó con la anterior? Porque no me dirás que no sacaba buenas fotos en tus manos!

Superb capture of a Roseate Skimmer, a species that I haven't seen on TN before. You must be pleased with your new equipment as the technical quality is excellent and the POV and composition are great. Excellent contrasting blurred BG too.

We haven't had a geat year for dragonflies this year, and earlier in the year I wasn't taking pictures well enough to do them justice. But this is a gem. It is a beautiful specimen and you have captured it in find detail, with perfect pov and dof.

Interestingly I have gone through exactly the same process of you in upgrading to the 40D and finding my Mac softward didn't support the raw files and had to use the Canon conversion software. I'm glad I did. How are you finding the 40D?

this is a species of dragonfly I until now have never before seen.The ruby eyes flowing into a purple/red and back to ruby is very nice to see and unusual.A finely detailed well focused shot with that great colour makes this a welcome addition to TN.Enjoy that new camera of yours because the photos you will get with it will be even better than those you had with the point and shoot you have been using because you have all the control.SLRs are tops.Thanks for showing this first and what you can do with your new camera. Wow, the clarity, crispness and detail on this amazing Dragonfly is excelent Jose. Perfect focus and exposure and the light and colours are excellent. Wonderful pov, very creative and with great impact. Beautiful.
Interesting and imformative note on the new RAW format. However, you used your new equipment effectively and I shall try macro with my Canon 70-300mm IS - very inspriational.

Being a new member to Trek Nature I am still browsing if time permits. I think at this stage my eyes are working overtime to search for anything that will grab my attention, and it is becoming a real difficult task. There are just so many talented photographers on the site and they all have such spectacular portfolios. It is upon this browsing session that I came across this most beautiful and exciting posting of your first dragonfly. The colours are just awesome and really unbelievable pretty. I have never seen a dragonfly in our area with such lovely display of colour. I really enjoyed looking at it, and I hope you can hear me clapping hands with standing ovation. Thanks for sharing.
