I shot this flock of Canada Geese as they were taking off early in the morning. They are most active in the early morning hours.

Canada Geese are large birds, 20 to 50 inches long with a wingspan of 50-68 inches.

Canada Geese are most easily identified by their long black neck, with a black head, crown and bill. They have a contrasting white cheek and throat area. Their undertail coverts are white. Their back, upper wings and flank are dark brown with a lighter brown (sometimes, nearly white) breast and belly. They have a short black tail and black legs with black webbed feet.

Canada Geese cover a wide range across North America. Canada Geese in different areas may be different sizes, have different vocalizations or have somewhat different coloring than those in other areas. All groups have the characteristic long black neck, head, crown and bill and the white cheeks.

The smallest Canada Geese (called "cackling geese" because of their high-pitched vocalizations) are only 1/4 the size of the largest Canada Geese (called "honkers").

Hi Bill,

Already practicing their flight eh? Usually they do this about a month before, especially early in the morning.
There are a variety, subspecies as it known, the smallest is the "Richardson's race." then the cackling, the Largest is the "Giant canada Goose" there are about 12 subspecies. Honkers is a nickname.

Excellent shot and well done on the composition. Beautiful scene.

Mike

Great picture. I enjoy the contrast between the bird and the background.

Nicely captured. Love the colors and the very sharp birds contrasted with the background. If the last goose had had its wings up, it would have been a perfect composition.
Is the fence a touch distracting and should it have been cropped out?

An amazing capture of these geese in formation, Bill!

Details, colors, BG, POV, and exposure are excellent.

Great job, thank you!

Hi Bill,
Nice picture of these Geese. They fly in a nice formation, a good captured moment. Pity of the detailed background, was a bigger aperture not possible to get a more unsharp background?
Anyway a very good shot.
Regards Ruud

Hi Bill,
this shot is great. Its hard to catch a bird in flight .. you mastered five and to top it of in such a nice formation. Good DOF and excellent colors.

Hi Bill.
What a wonderful image, the whole image is like 3D effect. Beautiful colours and the background soft but enough detail to see the countryside and fence.
Wonderful composition of the geese and colour is beautiful.
Great Shot.
Kathleen.
